There are plenty of flashy tablets to shop during Prime Day, but for anyone whose summer goals include finally finishing the stack of books on their nightstand, the newest Kindle release might be the smarter buy.
The 2024 Amazon Kindle, available in black and the popular Matcha green, is down to an unbeatable $85 this Prime Day — the cheapest we’ve ever seen it. The device is Amazon’s lightest and most compact Kindle, but still packs in the core features most readers actually need: a crisp 6-inch glare-free display, 16 GB of storage, USB-C charging, dark mode and a front light that Amazon says is 25% brighter at its maximum setting than the previous model.

The biggest selling point is portability. The Kindle measures 6.2 x 4.3 x 0.32 inches and weighs just 5.56 ounces, making it small enough to slip into a purse, carry-on, beach tote or jacket pocket. Unlike an iPad or Fire tablet, the Kindle is built specifically for reading, with a matte, glare-free display that more closely resembles paper than a traditional screen. That means it is easier to use outdoors, in bed or on a plane, without the distractions of texts, email alerts and social media apps.

The screen is also sharper than casual readers might expect from Amazon’s cheapest Kindle. The 6-inch display has a 300 ppi resolution, the same pixel density found on pricier Kindle models, so text looks clean and book-like rather than fuzzy or tablet-y. The adjustable front light makes it usable at night, while dark mode flips the page to a black background with white text for lower-light reading.
This version comes with 16 GB of storage, which Amazon says can hold thousands of books. For most readers, that is more than enough — especially since Amazon content also comes with free cloud storage. Battery life is another major advantage over a traditional tablet: Amazon says a single charge lasts up to six weeks, based on 30 minutes of reading per day with wireless off and the light set to 13. It charges over USB-C, reaching a full charge in about four hours from a computer or about two hours with a 9W USB power adapter.
