The BBC is experiencing a “come to Jesus” moment.
That’s not a reference to any self-reflection the corporation may have undergone in light of the many scandals it has faced over the past decade, but a new historical docuseries it has commissioned about the life of Jesus Christ.

Set to land on the BBC’s broadcast networks and streaming platform in 2027, the four-part docuseries will combine research, archaeology, technology and expert interviews to piece together the life of one of the most important figures in history. “Major thinkers” in Christianity, Judaism and Islam will also contribute, according to the press release.
Produced by Wonderhood Studios (“Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards”), the series promises “visceral, intimate detail” as well as “cinematic storytelling” that will also look at the era into which Jesus was born and the many forces — political, social, religious and cultural – that shaped his legacy.
Annabel Hobley (“World War 2 with Tom Hanks”) is showrunner, and Owen Gower (“The Essex Murders”) is series director.
“This series is testament to the BBC’s commitment to religious programming that deepens our understanding of each other and the world around us,” said the broadcaster’s head of religion and ethics, Daisy Scalchi.
“Jesus Christ is one of the most recognised and influential figures in human history – yet what we know about him comes from remarkably few sources. This ambitious series will bring his life into focus like never before. With new historical research and insights, there has never been a more compelling moment to re-look at the evidence and follow the path of Jesus’ life to map how he sparked a revolution that continues to impact our lives over 2000 years later.”
The series is the latest in a glut of Biblical screen content, from last year’s “Ruth & Boaz” on Netflix to Prime Video’s ongoing hit series ““House of David.” Last December Kevin Costner even hosted an ABC special titled “Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas” exploring the story of Mary and Joseph and there is no sign appetite is abating. This Christmas will see the release of feature film “Zero A.D.,” described as an “epic biblical drama” based on the Gospel of Matthew while Mel Gibson’s long-awaited film “The Resurrection of the Christ” is set to hit cinemas in 2027.
