The film, described by the outfits as “genre-bending,” is produced by YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani, whose previous producing credit, the Mohit Suri-directed romance “Saiyaara,” became the highest-grossing romantic film in Indian cinema history. “Mupapa” marks Widhani’s second outing as a producer. The film is directed by Sameer Saxena, an Indian showrunner and director, whose directorial credits include Netflix series “Kaala Paani.”
The partnership pairs YRF with Posham Pa Pictures, with the two companies aiming to jointly produce disruptive, immersive theatrical experiences for contemporary audiences. “Mupapa” is the first film to emerge from that collaboration, which is expected to continue with further joint theatrical productions.
YRF and Posham Pa first signed their partnership deal in December 2024, with the companies indicating at the time that an initial theatrical slate would follow.
The tie-up reflects an ongoing push by YRF chair Aditya Chopra to build a new creative business model at the studio, with Widhani spearheading efforts to expand YRF’s studio model on the production side. The studio is also broadening its footprint beyond theatrical releases, including a recent strategic investment in vertical entertainment company Rusk Media.
Khurrana, known for taking on unconventional projects, leads “Mupapa,” which YRF says will “deliver an incredibly new visual experience for people in theaters” and “will keep the audience at the edge of the seats from the word go.”
Posham Pa Pictures’ partners – Saxena, Biswapati Sarkar, Saurabh Khanna and Amit Golani – have collectively and individually worked on a number of well-received titles, including Netflix’s “Kaala Paani” and “Maamla Legal Hai.”
