Yet another wrinkle has appeared in President Donald Trump’s plans to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. On Friday afternoon, the Great American State Fair was forced to temporarily shut down due to extreme heat in the D.C. area.

“Due to the heat, and in coordination with public safety officials, the Great American State Fair will be temporarily closed until 5:00 p.m. today,” read an announcement from the official Freedom 250 X account. “The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority. Conditions are expected to improve later this afternoon, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back at 5:00 p.m. as preparations continue for this evening’s festivities.”

Forecasts have temperatures rising above 100 degrees in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

This isn’t the first time weather has gotten in the way of Trump’s vision for America’s semiquincentennial. In late June, Vanilla Ice, who was one of the last artists still committed to performing at a Freedom 250 event, had to cancel his show hours before it was set to occur due to “inclement weather.”

Freedom 250 announced the cancellation in an X post, without mentioning Vanilla Ice by name.

“Due to inclement weather in the area, the Freedom 250 Great American State Fair and FIFA World Cup 2026™ Fan Zone will be closed for the rest of the day — Friday, June 26, 2026,” the post read. “The safety of our guests, staff, and partners remains our top priority. We are actively monitoring conditions and will provide updates as they become available. The Great American State Fair will reopen tomorrow at 10 AM.”
