“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,’” Hathaway said.

“I can say I think we had a story breakthrough,” she added. “I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”

The continuation of “The Princess Diaries” series has been in production since 2022. Adele Lim (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) signed on to direct in 2024.

“We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people,” Lim told Variety at the Gold Gala carpet in May.

Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia, in the threequel. Lim teased that fans of the original movies can expect “a lot of fun returns” from other cast members.

Lim said in May that the shooting and production schedule were still being worked out, and a release date has yet to be announced.

“The Princess Diaries” was released in 2001 and was followed by the 2004 sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.” The two films have earned a combined $300 million worldwide.
