Amazon Studios has released the first look at the third season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” the fantasy television series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
According to an official logline, “Season Three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.”
During the “RIngs of Power” Season 3 presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, it was revealed that Simon Pegg will voice the Balrog, a hulking magma monster that will help Sauron forge the One Ring.
The “Rings of Power” cast members include Charlie Vickers, Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Robert Strange, and Markella Kavenagh. “Stranger Things” star Jamie Campbell Bower, Eddie Marsan, Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla and Adam Young also recently joined the cast for Season 3.

The show takes place thousands of years before the events of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” and follows the forging of the titular Rings of Power and “LOTR” antagonist Sauron’s return to Middle-earth.
“The Rings of Power” Season 3 is produced by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. The pair will also executive produce along with Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell, and director Charlotte Brändström. Brändström is joined by directors Sanaa Hamri and Stefan Schwartz, each director overseeing multiple episodes in the upcoming season. Matthew Penry-Davey is producer with Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee as co-producers.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” In honor of the film’s silver jubilee, Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. are bringing all three extended edition films from Peter Jackson’s trilogy back to theaters this January. The films will screen in DBOX presentation from Jan. 16-19 and then in standard format from Jan. 23-25. Limited-edition “LOTR”-themed concession items will be available at select cinemas, including popcorn buckets featuring maps of Middle-earth at the AMC, while buckets with a “One Ring” design will be available at Regal and local cinemas.
