“I would like to see ‘Sweet Charity’ again. Now, while you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked,” MacLaine said in a video posted by the Southampton Playhouse ahead of the theater’s upcoming screening of Bob Fosse’s musical film. “And between you and me, it didn’t do very well.”

MacLaine starred in Bob Fosse’s “Sweet Charity,” which released in 1969 and was a box office flop; nevertheless, Fosse found commercial success later in his career with “Cabaret” and “All That Jazz.” In Fosse’s directorial debut, MacLaine was joined in the cast by Sammy Davis Jr., Chita Rivera, John McMartin, Paula Kelly and Ricardo Montalban.

In December 2025, MacLaine received a lifetime achievement award at the first-ever Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The award was also named in MacLaine’s honor.

“Getting an award for dancing is the most important acknowledgment I could have,” she said while accepting her award. “My mother took me to dancing class when I was three because I had weak ankles and I fell in love with it.”

MacLaine won the best actress Oscar in 1984 for her work in “Terms of Endearment.” Her previous Oscar nominations were for “The Turning Point,” “The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir,” “Irma la Douce,” “The Apartment” and “Some Came Running.” Her last on-screen appearance was in the 2022 film “American Dreamer” and two episodes of “Only Murders in the Building.” In November 2025, Variety exclusively announced that MacLaine and Ansel Elgort would be starring in a road trip comedy titled “Lucy Boomer.”
