Two of Dolly Parton‘s most beloved movies are heading back to the big screen following the country music icon’s death on Tuesday.
Beginning on Friday, Aug. 28, AMC Theatres will offer special presentations of “Steel Magnolias” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” in approximately 200 locations across the U.S., including Parton’s home state of Tennessee. Participating theatres will offer two matinee screenings daily until Sept. 2 — including one showing of each title — at AMC Fan Faves value pricing.
Parton died Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80. While she is best known as the queen of country music — selling more than 100 million records and taking home 11 Grammy Awards — the Nashville legend also made a significant impact in Hollywood. Parton made her film acting debut in 1980’s “9 to 5,” starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as Southern office secretary Doralee Rhodes. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for acting, as well as an Oscar nod for the title track.
For her follow-up, Parton played opposite Burt Reynolds in the 1982 musical comedy “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” Parton earned another Golden Globe nod for her performance as Miss Mona Stangley, the proprietess of a brothel — with Reynolds as the local sheriff and her secret lover — as they fight to keep her business, the Chicken Ranch, open after it’s targeted by a moral crusader.
In the 1989 comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias,” Parton demonstrated her acting range as part of an all-star ensemble that included Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. In the film, about a group of Southern women weathering life’s storms, Parton played Truvy Jones, a beauty technician whose wisdom was as potent as the hairspray that lifted her teased roots.
