\nMarcia Lucas, the film editor who won an Oscar for editing \u201cStar Wars,\u201d directed by her former husband George Lucas, and shaped several influential films of the 1970s, died Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was 80.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe family\u2019s attorney confirmed she died of cancer. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarcia will be remembered as a brilliant storyteller, a trailblazer for women in film, a loving mother and grandmother, a generous host, and a loyal friend whose humor and sparkle filled every room she entered. Her influence on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember the way she made life feel more vivid, more beautiful, more fun, and more full of love,\u201d the family statement said. \u201cHer work was known for its emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity \u2014 a rare ability to find the truth of a scene and bring heart, momentum, and clarity to the screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMarcia Lucas, who sometimes called George Lucas\u2019 \u201csecret weapon,\u201d co-edited George Lucas\u2019 \u201cAmerican Graffiti,\u201d for which she was Oscar-nommed, and then won an Oscar for editing \u201cStar Wars.\u201d She also edited \u201cReturn of the Jedi,\u201d as well as Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cAlice Doesn\u2019t Live Here Anymore,\u201d \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d and \u201cNew York, New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe played a significant role in helping her husband shape the \u201cStar Wars\u201d films. In his book \u201cThe Secret History of Star Wars,\u201d Michael Kaminski wrote, \u201cMarcia, along with many of George\u2019s friends, critiqued which characters worked, which ones didn\u2019t, which scenes were good, and Lucas composed the script in this way. Marcia was always critical of Star Wars, but she was one of the few people Lucas listened to carefully, knowing she had a skill for carving out strong characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGeorge Lucas told Rolling Stone in 1977 that it was her idea to have Obi-Wan Kenobi die on the Death Star. \u201cThe more I thought about Ben getting killed the more I liked the idea because, one, it made the threat of Vader greater and that tied in with The Force and the fact that he could use the dark side.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMark Hamill said in an interview that \u201cI know for a fact that Marcia Lucas was responsible for convincing him to keep that little \u2018kiss for luck\u2019 before Carrie [Fisher] and I swing across the chasm in the first film. George Lucas thought people were laughing in the previews, but according to Hamill she said, \u201c\u2018George, they\u2019re laughing because it\u2019s so sweet and unexpected\u2019 \u2014 and her influence was such that if she wanted to keep it, it was in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn Marcia Lou Griffin in Modesto, she was raised in North Hollywood and started out as a film librarian before serving an Editor\u2019s Guild apprenticeship. She met George Lucas when they were both hired to work with legendary editor Verna Field. She married George Lucas in 1969 and served as assistant editor on his first feature film, \u201cTHX 1138.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThey divorced in 1983. Her second marriage, which ended in 1993, was to Tom Rodrigues, who worked as a production manager at Skywalker Ranch. <\/p>\n

\n\tShe is survived by her daughters Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper; her grandchildren Felix Hallikainen, Aeliana Hallikainen, and Knox Soper and her chosen family Sarah Dyer and Jon Taylor.<\/p>\n
