\n\tAmong the first people to arrive on set at \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d are RuPaul and her makeup artist, David Petruschin, better known as \u201cRaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the show\u2019s FYC event, which included a set visit to the location where \u201cDrag Race\u201d films, Petruschin explained what it takes to transform RuPaul. He said, \u201cWe spend about six hours in there. The biggest part of getting into drag is makeup.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFans of the show will recognize Petruschin; he competed on the second season of \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d in 2010 and on \u201cAll Stars\u201d Season 1. In 2017, he became RuPaul\u2019s personal makeup artist and has been contouring and applying makeup ever since. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program (Non-Prosthetic) in 2020.<\/p>\n

\n\tTransforming RuPaul requires a \u201ccomplete reconstruction,\u201d and out of those six hours, 45 minutes are spent on foundation \u2013 \u201cblending, creating and reshaping the face.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring that time, Petruschin revealed that Ru doesn\u2019t scroll or play on her phone, but instead \u201cshe closes her eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving been RuPaul\u2019s trusted collaborator, Petruschin recalled feeling a little nervous when he first walked in. He said, \u201cWhat am I stepping into?\u201d As it turns out, Ru doesn\u2019t give attitude. \u201cShe is one of the sweetest people, one of the most giving people. We enjoy our time together, because if we didn\u2019t, that would be awful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOccasionally, the pair bounces ideas off one another as they continue to keep coming up with fresh and innovative looks. But not everyone hits. Petruschin laughed, \u201cThere are times when I\u2019ll go way out in left field and say, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s do this.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018Bitch, what did you smoke this morning?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the end of the day, it\u2019s about raising the bar, getting creative, and coming up with something beautiful.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Petruschin focuses on the show\u2019s host, head makeup artist Natasha Marcelina handles the show\u2019s roster of guests. This season included Brooke Shields.<\/p>\n

\n\tMarcelina said she treats every guest that walks into the werk room as a new experience. \u201cIt\u2019s typically my first time working with them, and so I don\u2019t have a prior relationship with them, so I have to immediately adapt to whatever it is they may want, and make sure they have a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Shields, who is known for her eyebrows, Marcelina said, \u201cWhy would you want to change that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer approach is simple and borrows from RuPaul: \u201cRu says, you don\u2019t need to reinvent the wheel, and that\u2019s why people love her and come to see her for that. So we want to just maintain that legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEvery so often, one guest will entrust Marcelina with a blank palette, and to get creative. While she didn\u2019t divulge any names, even the most conservative guests trust her. She said, \u201cThey will come here and say, \u2018Hey, it\u2019s time to have fun. It\u2019s time to do glitter, rhinestones, lashes, etc. Wear the outfit, wear the feathers, do the heels, and this is the perfect place to do it.\u201d She added, \u201cWe are so happy to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
