\nAnderson Cooper signed off of \u201c60 Minutes\u201d on Sunday with a salute to the newsmagazine\u2019s editorial independence and longevity. He told viewers \u201cI hope \u201960 Minutes\u2019 remains \u201960 Minutes\u2019 \u201d in a segment that wrapped up his 20-year run as a correspondent for the venerable program.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s very few things that have been around for as long as \u201960 Minutes\u2019 has and [have been able to] maintain the quality that it has,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cThings can always evolve and change, and I think that\u2019s awesome, and things should evolve and change, but I hope the core of what \u201960 Minutes\u2019 is always remains,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the independence of \u201960 Minutes\u2019 has been critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also cited the show\u2019s standing with viewers as a trusted source of reporting and investigative journalism. Cooper joined the show in the 2006-07 season through an unusual arrangement between CBS News and CNN, where Cooper is a top anchor.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think the trust it has with viewers is critical to the success of \u201960 Minutes.\u2019 When you see a \u201960 Minutes\u2019 story, and you\u2019re like, \u2018That was a really good story.\u2019 It was a good story because it requires time, it requires patience, it requires money,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope that\u2019s known and honored and valued and continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper has juggled his \u201c60 Minutes\u201d responsibilities alongside his day job at CNN. Cooper has expressed that he wants to spend more time with his young children, ages 4 and 6. However, there\u2019s been much speculation that the broad changes within CBS News under the new regime of editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and Paramount Skydance\u2019s ownership of CBS played a part in Cooper\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe whole time I\u2019ve done pieces on \u201960 Minutes,\u2019 my full-time job has been over at CNN, and still is,\u201d Cooper told \u201c60 Minutes Overtime.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s been really challenging to do the kind of work you need to do to have a great \u201960 Minutes\u2019 piece on. CNN doesn\u2019t like it if I take a lot of time off to work on a \u201960 Minutes\u2019 piece, so I\u2019ve worked mostly for \u201960 Minutes\u2019 on weekends. My vacation time at CNN has been working on \u201960 Minutes\u2019 pieces. I\u2019ve loved it, but it\u2019s been tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper added that he hoped the franchise still has a long run ahead.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI hope \u201960 Minutes\u2019 is around for when my kids grow up and have kids of their own, and they can watch it with their kids,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
