\n\tTokyo-based production company K2 Pictures closed its K2P Film Fund I at $33 million and unveiled a 10-title slate at a press conference at Cannes, with the session anchored by the world premiere of a teaser trailer for \u201cShumei \u2013 The Living Legacy of Kabuki,\u201d auteur Miike Takashi\u2018s inaugural documentary feature.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe fund closed in February with Mitsubishi UFJ Bank and the Development Bank of Japan among its principal backers. K2 Pictures also announced $67 million in debt financing secured alongside the fund, bringing its total financing to $100 million. Three productions backed by the fund are now complete \u2013 one of which opened theatrically in February \u2013 with three more in post-production and five further titles scheduled for release between June and December 2026. An additional five productions are set to begin shooting before year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShumei \u2013 The Living Legacy of Kabuki,\u201d slated for a September release, turns Miike\u2019s camera on the succession ceremony in which Ichikawa Danj\u016br\u014d XIII formally inherited the storied Danj\u016br\u014d name in Kabuki, Japan\u2019s classical performing art. The film records the behind-the-scenes preparations for the actor\u2019s name-inheritance debut performance. \u201cWho exactly is Ichikawa Danj\u016br\u014d XIII Hakuen? I want to ask this question in the simplest terms,\u201d said Miike. \u201cDanjuro Hakuen\u2019s Kabuki is not merely Kabuki. It delves into the very essence of entertainment. This is a documentary that captures that journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am truly grateful and honored that the name Danjuro, passed down through generations over a long history, will be preserved for posterity in this film,\u201d said Ichikawa Danj\u016br\u014d XIII.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the newly announced projects, director Nagata Koto \u2013 whose previous feature \u201cBaka\u2019s Identity\u201d competed at last year\u2019s Busan International Film Festival and swept four prizes at the 35th Japan Film Critics Awards including best picture and best director \u2013 will helm \u201cThe Nuke Crab,\u201d a social noir set in Fukushima in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The screenplay is co-written by novelist Akamatsu Riichi, drawing on his own experiences as a decontamination worker, and filmmaker Iwai Shunji, who also serves as executive producer. <\/p>\n

\n\tDirector Otomo Keishi, known for the \u201cRurouni Kenshin\u201d franchise and Netflix\u2019s \u201c10Dance,\u201d will helm \u201cConde Koma,\u201d a Japan-Brazil-U.S. co-production tracing the life of Mitsuyo Maeda, the Japanese jujutsu master whose global travels are credited with sparking the development of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and contemporary MMA. <\/p>\n

\n\tDirector Kato Takuya, whose theater work has taken him to London and Taipei, will helm \u201cNap,\u201d an experimental Japan-France-Iceland co-production centered on a protagonist with social eating phobia who develops a sleep allergy \u2013 a conceit the film uses to interrogate what it means to share a life with another person.<\/p>\n

\n\tFurther newly announced titles include \u201cGigant,\u201d an animated feature based on manga artist Hiroya Oku\u2019s series of the same name, marking K2 Pictures\u2019 first foray into animation; a Mexico-Japan horror project from director Katayama Shinzo \u2013 a former assistant to Bong Joon-ho who subsequently helmed \u201cSiblings of the Cape\u201d and the streaming series \u201cGannibal\u201d \u2013 currently in development with Mi\u00e9rcoles Entertainment (U.S.) and The Lift (Mexico); \u201cMy Teacher,\u201d developed by South Korean director No Deok in collaboration with screenwriter Ikegami Junya; \u201cHold,\u201d the feature directorial debut of actor and novelist Fujitani Ayako, a Kyoto-set romantic drama about two women \u2013 a Japanese woman and a foreigner \u2013 bound by a fateful connection whose lives begin to shift as a result; \u201cUFO Club,\u201d the debut feature of director Kaneko Milena, selected for this year\u2019s Udine Far East Film Festival project market; and \u201cThe Book of Human Insects,\u201d a dark musical adaptation of Tezuka Osamu\u2019s manga, part of the Tezuka 100th anniversary project, directed by Ninomiya Ken.<\/p>\n

\n\tPreviously announced K2 Pictures titles include \u201cLook Back\u201d from Kore-eda Hirokazu; \u201cTrophy,\u201d directed by Son Myung-ah, due July 10; \u201cChildren Untold\u201d from Nishikawa Miwa, due October 16; and \u201cBetween Two Lovers\u201d from Hirose Nanako, due November 27.<\/p>\n

\n\tK2 Pictures was founded in 2023 by CEO Kii Muneyuki, a former head producer at Toei who has worked across exhibition, distribution, and production. <\/p>\n
