Earlier breakouts like \u201cMy Life as a Zucchini\u201d (2016) \u201cMirai\u201d (2018) and\u201d I Lost My Body\u201d (2019) ushered sophisticated international fare into awards conversations, even as programers were slower to seize on those gains. As recently as 2023, two local producers unions authored an open letter criticizing Cannes for not programing a single animated title in its main selections.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe needed visibility and recognition,\u201d says Miyu Prods. founder Emmanuel-Alain Raynal, who chaired the French independent producers union at the time. \u201cI\u2019m not saying that letter changed everything, but there was definitely a moment when the French industry united around the idea that animation needed to be more present at Cannes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe response was swift, reinforced by market momentum. The following year, \u201cThe Most Precious of Cargoes\u201d landed in competition, while \u201cFlow\u201d emerged from Un Certain Regard to become a global breakout, drawing 8.2 million admissions worldwide and winning the Oscar, setting a new benchmark for European animation. Those successes helped open the floodgates for 10 animated titles premiering this year.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSix of those films will play in competition at Annecy \u2014 among them \u201cWe Are Aliens,\u201d \u201cIn Waves\u201d and \u201cViva Carmen\u201d \u2014 reflecting a closer alignment between the two festivals that has strengthened the wider ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAnnecy anchors you within the animation world,\u201d Raynal explains. \u201cBut it doesn\u2019t really place you in the wider industry. Cannes is different. Returning there regularly gives you broader legitimacy with companies, key talent and financiers. More buyers come in, minimum guarantees go up, and financiers become more willing to back ambitious projects. Sales agents spend more upfront, but that\u2019s very good news for producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis year, Charades is handling \u201cIn Waves\u201d and \u201cTangles,\u201d two projects with English-language casts and literary pedigree. Where Cannes once helped push European and Japanese animation into the U.S. awards circuit, prestige animation now targets the Croisette directly.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cCannes is now a place people look for animation,\u201d says one senior awards strategist. \u201cPlaying there opens doors, lowers resistance, and gets people to watch, support, and program it. Just saying \u2018Cannes\u2019 immediately changes the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSo those with projects in the pipeline can take comfort in one insider\u2019s broader ambition.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI am fundamentally opposed to a token animation slot,\u201d says Directors\u2019 Fortnight head Julien Rejl, who selected three titles from around 30 submissions \u2014 a record for the sidebar. \u201cIf one day we receive ten ambitious, compelling animated features, then we select all 10.
