\n\tGenerally speaking, the announcement of Grammy-winning pop powerhouse Pink as the host of the 79th Tony Awards on Sunday was met with two immediate reactions: a) will she fly, and b), why her?<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Pink was a \u201ctheater kid\u201d growing up (more on that shortly), the second question was actually her initial reaction as well, as she told Variety<\/em> at a press event on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the call came, \u201cI was like, \u2018Why me? I\u2019ve never been on Broadway,\u2019 which is probably the collective eye roll that I felt,\u201d she recalled with a laugh. \u201cBut they said, \u2018Because we want more viewership.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Great! I have a purpose! I\u2019m your guy!\u2019 So here we are \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s a beautiful group of people to celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for the first question \u2014 regarding what we can expect to see when she hosts the show from New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday \u2014 she did not give specifics, but told another interviewer cagily, \u201cEveryone always expects me to fly, so I literally walk into every building like, \u2018Where can I hang from? What\u2019s strong enough?\u2019 They were like, \u2018Calm down, it\u2019s Radio City.\u2019 So we\u2019ll see \u2014 but I\u2019m doing some things!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe did allow that there will be \u201cmany, many, many costume changes, as many as I can possibly do. There will be stunts \u2014 and not just for me. I\u2019m hoping to cajole another performer into taking a chance with a stunt, so we\u2019ll see! And Amber Ruffin, who wrote \u2018Bigfoot,\u2019 is helping me write my whole Tonys [script].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe intro, she continued, will be a \u201cseven and a half minute opener that my buddies Benj and Justin wrote\u201d \u2014\u00a0Pasek and Paul, respectively, of course, writers of \u201cDear Evan Hansen,\u201d \u201cLa La Land\u201d and \u201cThe Greatest Showman.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be raucous and wild and ridiculous,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of a throwback, but not really. There\u2019s gonna be like 170 people onstage with me, and I get to be ridiculous and make fun of myself right away, which was my one rule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPink may not have been an obvious choice for the hosting role, but she\u2019s certainly no dilettante. \u201cMy mom was an E.R. nurse, and she would save up all her money, and once a year we would go downtown and get tickets to a show, a restaurant and an outfit,\u201d she recalled to a different interviewer on Tuesday. \u201cIt was my favorite night with my mom every year. We\u2019d saw \u2018Phantom of the Opera,\u2019 \u2018Les Miz,\u2019 \u2018La Cage aux Folles.\u2019 I wanted to be Cosette by the time I was nine. It definitely shaped what I do as Pink.\u201d (It also doesn\u2019t hurt that her songs are currently featured in two Broadway productions \u2014 \u201cRaise Your Glass\u201d in \u201cMoulin Rouge! The Musical\u201d and \u201cFuckin\u2019 Perfect\u201d in \u201c& Juliet.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked if a certain show in particular was her gateway, she told Variety<\/em> after a pause, \u201cProbably \u2018Annie,\u2019 the movie. And \u2018Les Miz,\u2019 of course, and \u2018Fiddler on the Roof,\u2019 so many. I trained classically when I first started taking singing lessons, so I sang \u2018Phantom of the Opera\u2019 and started in a total theater place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tYet before taking on the hosting role, Pink had to clear it with one person: Her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, who has aspirations for a Broadway career. \u201cShe\u2019s very serious about it, and this is her lane,\u201d Pink said. \u201cSo me getting her permission was [important]: I was like, \u2018If you don\u2019t want me to do this, I\u2019m not doing it,\u2019 but she was very supportive and very excited \u2014 her first reaction was, \u2018Do I get a seat?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tShe does, although Willow will not be joining her mom onstage Sunday. \u201cI have been trying to convince Willow to be in a show with me for years,\u201d Pink said, \u201cBut she has to do her own thing \u2014 she\u2019s really hung up on this nepo-baby thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s Tony Awards race is expected to feature major marquee names who stood out on Broadway over the past year, including Lea Michele (\u201cChess\u201d), Joshua Henry (\u201cRagtime\u201d), Lesley Manville (\u201cOedipus\u201d) and John Lithgow (\u201cGiant\u201d), among others.<\/p>\n

\n\tPink has seen many of the shows that are nominated, she told Variety. <\/em>\u201cI loved \u2018Ragtime,\u2019 I loved \u2018Lost Boys\u2019 because the staging is incredible, I loved Jessica Vosk and \u2018Beaches.\u2019 I loved \u2018Bigfoot\u2019 \u2014 that was probably my favorite show. I loved it so much, I had two nine-year-olds with me and I was like, \u2018This is so inappropriate,\u2019 everyone was so ridiculous and lovable and it was so funny and such a sweet story,\u201d she laughed. \u201cI have so many more to see \u2014\u00a0I haven\u2019t seen \u2018Schmigadoon\u2019 yet, I haven\u2019t seen \u2018Titanique\u2019 yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother highlight of the year has been her guest stint hosting \u201cThe Kelly Clarkson Show\u201d \u2014 which she has stressed she is not taking over. But she\u2019s such a natural that it begs the question of whether she\u2019d like her own talk show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019d never say never!,\u201d she said. \u201cI like connecting with people, I like getting the truth out of people,\u201d before turning less serious, \u201cI kind of thought for a while I would like to revamp \u2018The Gong Show,\u2019 but I\u2019m kind of over that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Tony Awards ceremony will broadcast live to both coasts on the CBS Television Network and stream on Paramount+ on June 7 at 8 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n
