\n\tIn further notable transactions, Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal\/Natalia Oreiro romantic drama \u201cNothing Between Us\u201d has kicked off first deals. Latido\u2019s high-flying auteur genre movies \u201cThe Awakening\u201d and \u201cThe Whisper\u201d have added new territories, while two new genre titles \u2013 war action movie \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d and period serial killer thriller \u201cThe Harvester\u201d \u2013 have kicked off first pre-sales.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tPut together, Latido\u2019s Cannes deals underscore the kind of films which still sell in a hugely cautious market: Critical hits from star auteurs (\u201cRe-Creation\u201d), singular breakouts from newer talent (\u201c9 Moons\u201d) and genre, especially if made with arthouse substance and\/or some sense of scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nSheridan, Merriamn\u2019s \u2018Re-Creation\u2019 Closes the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRe-Creation\u201d applies Sidney Lumet\u2019s classic \u201c12 Angry Men\u201d construct to a fictional trail re-examining the real-life evidence against of the prime suspect in French producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier\u2019s murder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso written by Sheridan and Merriman, \u201cRe-Creation\u201d has garnered some glowing reviews \u2013 \u201cA rich portrait of all shades of humanity: our convictions, prejudices, and in our best moments, deep reserves of logic and compassion,\u201d said Variety<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nSingularity as a Selling Point<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Patricia Ortega, behind Sundance hit \u201cMamacruz,\u201d \u201c9 Moons\u201d has been licensed by Latido to Encripta for the whole of Latin America, and to Cinemien for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, U.K. and Ireland, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, Portugal, Italy and Israel. Most deals have theatrical commitments. In the film, Jack G\u00f3mez-Rolls (\u201cHeridas\u201d) stars as Angel, a transgender man who becomes unexpectedly pregnant.\u00a0 What makes the film stand out is not only its high concept but feel-good tone: Pregnancy forces Angel to reconsider what masculinity, identity and family mean, which is all for the better. \u201cWe have to deproblematize what is natural and diverse, what others see as extraordinary and a problem,\u201d Ortega has said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nStars Matter: \u2018Nothing Between Us\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tStarring Garc\u00eda Bernal and Oreiro and brought to market at Berlin\u2019s EFM, \u201cNothing Between Us\u201d has sold in first sales to Poland (Gutek), Spain (Yoda Films), Australia (Palace), Slovenia (TV Slovenjia) and worldwide airlines (Avunju). \n\tLatido Films has added yet further territories to two banner, elevated genre auteur titles, \u201cThe Whisper,\u201d from Uruguay\u2019s Gustavo Hern\u00e1ndez (\u201cVirus: 32,\u201d \u201cThe Silent House\u201d), which has closed Vietnam with Sunrise Media Global and Italy with Movies Inspired, and \u201cThe Awakening,\u201d built on material shot by the late Colombian filmmaker Jaime Osorio M\u00e1rquez (\u201cThe Squad\u201d). \n\t\u201cMixing genres works really, really well. So don\u2019t make a crime series, don\u2019t make a royalty series, make a crime royalty series,\u201d Plum Research\u2019s Jonathan Broughton said at late May\u2019s Conecta Fiction. The same can be true of films.\u00a0 \u201cThe Whisper\u201d is \u201cpart folk horror, part supernatural fantasy and part gender violence nightmare, \u201cThe Awakening\u201d a supernatural action movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBoth underscore the emergence in Spain of genre made at scale, one of the country\u2019s consolidating hallmarks as a film export force. \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d begins and ends in Spain\u2019s 1936-39 Civil War \u201cHigh Noon\u201d Western style with Faura, a former Spanish legionary fighting for the Republicans, who is left standing alone behind a blockade faces former comrades advancing down the street towards him, protected by tanks The film then flashes back to Spain\u2019s 1921 Rif War becoming a horror-of-war action movie as Faura joins an 8-man Legionary squad whose revenge raid on a Berber village becomes a suicide mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tInspired by Spain\u2019s first documented serial killer and boasting meticulous 1870s period construction and a \u20ac10 million ($11.6 million) budget \u2013 notably high for Spain \u2013 \u201cThe Harvester,\u201d produced by La Claqueta and Amania Films, marks a step up in scale for director P\u00e9rez Sa\u00f1udo, whose debut \u201cAne is Missing\u201d was already notable for its fluid use of genre.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn further deals, Latido has sold comedy anthology \u201cHomo sapiens,\u201d from Mariano Cohn and Gast\u00f3n Duprat, (\u201cOfficial Competition\u201d) to both Australia (Palace) and Hungary (Cirko). Pedro Aguilera\u2019s \u201cLadies\u2019 Hunting Party,\u201d a contemporary drama inspired by Carlos Saura\u2019s \u201cThe Hunt,\u201d has closed Australia with Palace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs time passes, buyers realize that there are movies that, outside the Cannes Festival\u2019s selection, are different and exciting from other territories than France-participated films,\u201d said Antonio Saura.<\/p>\n

\nRemakes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tSales opportunities also take in sizeable business in remake accords. Several offers are in, for example, for the remake of \u201cThe Platform,\u201d which Latido sold to Netflix in one of the most arresting deals at the 2019 Toronto Festival. Interested buyers include companies from Latin America and Europe. More potential business on other remakes will be announced shortly, Saura added.<\/p>\n
