\nHelen Mirren, Russell Crowe, Scott Eastwood, and Gore Verbinsky are among top talents set to attend Italy\u2019s upcoming Taormina Film Festival that has unveiled the lineup for its upcoming 72nd edition that will mix crowdpleasers with more esoteric quality fare.<\/p>\n

\n\tCrowe, as previously announced, is expected to make the treck to the storied fest in the Sicilian resort \u2013known to U.S. audiences as the location of \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d Season 2 \u2013 for the world premiere of Australian action thriller \u201cBear Country\u201d in which he reunites\u00a0with \u201cUnhinged\u201d helmer Derrick Borte to play a veteran club owner whose plans for a peaceful retirement with his girlfriend are derailed when a masked assailant robs his establishment. \u201cBear Country\u201d will bow as a special event in Taormina\u2019s ancient Greek theatre in the shadow of Sicily\u2019s active Mt. Etna volcano with most of the the key cast, including \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d star Aaron Paul, in tow.<\/p>\n

\n\tVerbinsky, probably best known for the first three \u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d movies is coming to Taormina with his offbeat sci-fi comedy \u201cGood Luck, Have Fun, Don\u2019t Die\u201d that is screening in competition.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther Taormina competition titles comprise Ashley Walters-directed coming-of-age drama \u201cAnimol\u201d set in a British juvenile detention; Turkish director Banu S\u0131vac\u0131\u2019s intimate relationship drama \u201cHear the Yellow\u201d; dissident Iranian filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi potent drama\u00a0\u201cRoya\u201d about an Iranian teacher detained in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison; Michael Gallagher\u2019s \u201cThe Leader\u201d starring Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga in the true story of the cult known as Heaven\u2019s Gate that convinced dozens to abandon their lives and await evacuation from planet Earth.<\/p>\n

\n\tRounding out the competition are Congolese Filmmaker Rafiki Fariala\u2019s Cannes standout \u201cCongo Boy\u201d; Japanese filmmaker\u00a0Taro Miyaoka\u2019s horror film \u201cErica\u201d; debuting German director Ben Voit\u2019s \u201cGropiusstadt Supernova\u201d set during a frantic New Year\u2019s Eve in Berlin; Italian director Guido Chiesa\u2019s Rome-set \u201cLittle Miracle\u201d; and Cuban docudrama \u201cLa Calle Pura\u201d about a teenager who dreams of becoming Cuba\u2019s next Reggaeton star.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs previously announced, Jane Campion is presiding over the Taormina fest jury and Helen Mirren will receive a lifetime achievement award. Scott Eastwood will hold a masterclass for students and also pick up an award.<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving a jury headed by Campion \u2014 who is a two-time Academy Award winner for \u201dThe Piano\u201d (1993) and \u201cThe Power of the Dog \u201c(2021), and the first woman in history to win the Palme d\u2019Or at the Cannes Film Festival \u2014 will help boost the international standing of the Sicilian event that is being revamped by\u00a0marketing guru and festivals specialist Tiziana Rocca.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe high-caliber jury panel also comprises Holly Hunter, costume designer Miyako Bellizzi, casting director Francine Maisler, breakout director Akinola Davies Jr. (\u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow\u201d), Amazon MGM Studios\u2019 head of global marketing Sue Kroll, and Italian actor\/director Pietro Castellitto.<\/p>\n

\n\tRocca, who has close Hollywood ties, has been back at the Taormina helm since 2025,\u00a0eight years after she was forced to step down due to political infighting in 2017 following a five-year stint. Rocca\u2019s first move last year was to reintroduce a competitive section comprising 10 titles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year Rocca has introduced a Short Film Competition section comprising eleven works connected to Sicily through their stories and themes.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Taormina opener will be the Italian premiere of the first episode of HBO\u2019s \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d Season 3 with stars Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon), Harry Collett (Jacaerys Velaryon), Bethany Antonia (Baela Targaryen) and Phoebe Campbell (Rhaena Targaryen) set to attend the show\u2019s spectacular Taormina Greek amphitheater launch. <\/p>\n

\n\tOut of competition entries comprise episodes 1 and 6\u00a0of Canadian filmmaker Michael Zelniker\u2019s\u00a0global water crisis documentary series \u201cThe Struggle for Mother Water\u201d; Renny Harlin-directed disaster movie \u201cDeep Water\u201d; Tommy Dorfman\u2019s young adult drama \u201cI Wish You All the Best,\u201d about a teen coming out as nonbinary; and Bill Condon-directed musical \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpecial events will include a Greek Theatre screening of the restored copy of Luchino Visconti neo-realist classic \u201cBellissima\u201d marking the 75th anniversary of the film\u2019s release and Anna Magnani\u2019s prize-winning performance as a working-class mother determined to get her young daughter a movie deal.<\/p>\n

\n\tOscar-winning Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore, who is Sicilian, will be honored in Taormina with the upcowith the Golden Globes Prize for Documentary in partnership with Artemis Rising Foundation for his docufilm \u201cBrunello: The Gracious Visionary\u201d about Brunello Cucinelli, the fashion designer known as Italy\u2019s \u201cKing of Cashmere.\u201d<\/p>\n
