\nJ. Smith-Cameron is giving Emmy voters several reasons to consider her this season.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in 2024, when Variety<\/em> spoke with Smith-Cameron, the actor had made a cameo on HBO\u2019s \u201cHacks\u201d as Deborah Vance\u2019s (Jean Smart) younger sister, Kathy. \u201cIt feels to me like there\u2019s more,\u201d Smith-Cameron had said.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe was right \u2014 there was more. This season, she manifested a return to the comedy series, appearing in two episodes, and continued to be the thorn in Deborah\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the episode \u201cD\u2019Amazing Race,\u201d Deborah and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) hunt Kathy down to get the rights to \u201cWho\u2019s Making Dinner?,\u201d the sitcom that Deborah and her former husband starred in and wrote. Kathy actually owns the rights to the show. But she\u2019ll give Deborah what she wants \u2014 but only in exchange for something she knows Deborah won\u2019t give up: their late mother\u2019s salt and pepper shakers that are in Deborah\u2019s possession.<\/p>\n

\n\tLater in the season, Kathy returns \u2014 this time in Deborah\u2019s dreams, or should that be nightmares? When Deborah steps on stage at her Madison Square Garden show, she looks down to see that she\u2019s completely naked, and the audience is filled with versions of her sister laughing and mocking her.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m a projection of Deborah\u2019s brain,\u201d Smith-Cameron says. Pulling off Deborah\u2019s nightmare was a \u201cdifferent kind of acting assignment\u201d for Smith-Cameron. Showrunner Paul W. Downs was directing the episode and told her to \u201cjust go for it.\u201d Standing in front of a green screen, Smith-Cameron shot multiple reactions, looking to her left and right, improvising a few comments, talking to the \u201cother Kathys,\u201d and giving Downs everything he needed to mash that scene together. Smith-Cameron could let loose because this was a different off-the-wall version of Kathy. \u201cThis is a nightmare, so I didn\u2019t feel like I had to worry about being real,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\tHow does Smith-Cameron see Kathy? \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of conflict between Deborah and Kathy, but I don\u2019t think Kathy is a bad person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe says she liked that Kathy wasn\u2019t a quivering victim. \u201cI think she\u2019s pushing back against her bossy older sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSmith-Cameron got to flex her creative muscles even further when she appeared on CBS hit \u201cElsbeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the show, she plays the director of New York\u2019s most prestigious debutante ball, Isadora Langford. And yes, Smith-Cameron admits she did model Isadora\u2019s whole persona on Vogue\u2019s global chief content officer and former editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou could tell by her dialogue that she had affectations, and she was very chippy about her past, and that\u2019s why her story unfolded the way it did,\u201d Smith-Cameron says.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Wintour idea came from Smith-Cameron. When she received the script and offer, it was over Christmas break. \u201cNobody was answering emails, but I reached [director] Peter Sollett and the showrunner, Jonathan Tolins. I ran it by them. I said, \u2018Look, I\u2019m going to order an inexpensive wig off the internet that will either be ridiculous, and I\u2019ll send it back, or it will work.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSollett and Tolins went for it, and so did costume designer Dan Lawson. Lawson added statement necklaces and other jewelry, and even emulated her silhouette, putting Smith-Cameron in shirtwaist blouses. Smith-Cameron says, \u201cIt was not meant to be a dig at Ms. Wintour at all. It was a compliment because this woman was so desperate to seem that chic, that she would do an imitation, even if it\u2019s second-rate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the episode, a powerful patriarch is stabbed with a sword, and it\u2019s up to the NYPD and Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) to find out who killed Sterling Barlowe (John Bedford Lloyd) and what their motives were.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpoiler alert! It was Isadora who killed Sterling with a sword.<\/p>\n

\n\tStabbing someone with a sword was no easy feat. It required Smith-Cameron to work with the show\u2019s stunt coordinator, Kevin Rogers. Rogers gave her all the tips she needed on how to wield the sword, which was as heavy as it looked. Smith-Cameron jokes, \u201cJohn Bedford Lloyd is 6 feet 3 inches tall. I\u2019m 5 feet 4 inches tall, and I\u2019m coming in with a sword, and he\u2019s not taking me seriously at all \u2014 he\u2019s really funny in the episode, and he doesn\u2019t think of her as a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUp next, Smith-Cameron has two independent movies that she\u2019s working on, and next year, she\u2019s going to shoot FX\u2019s \u201cSeven Sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt has been picked up to series and stars Elizabeth Olsen, Cristin Milioti and Smith-Cameron. Will Arbery is on board as the show\u2019s scribe. Sean Durkin is directing.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show follows a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when one sister, Adrienne (Olsen), starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing the family to confront long-buried secrets.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is the most compelling, strange, spooky genre piece, but also a family drama, and I play the matriarch of this family,\u201d Smith-Cameron says. \u201cI\u2019m a very right-wing judge in Washington state who is running for the supreme court in Washington, and endorsed by the governor; she\u2019s got a lot of political affiliations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile she can\u2019t divulge much about the show, \u201cWe did shots in the pilot that were reminiscent of \u2018Rosemary\u2019s Baby\u2019 and \u2018The Exorcist.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tShe is currently filming an independent film in Oklahoma and admits she would love to play a detective or a spy. And both her husband, filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan, and his best friend, actor Matthew Broderick, agree.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMatthew Broderick made this comment to Kenny,\u201d Smith-Cameron says. \u201cHe said, \u2018She\u2019s a funny one. The wheels are always turning.\u2019 Kenny will often say, \u2018Oh, the turbine fans, I can feel them all whirling.\u2019 I love to play those characters that you can \u2014,\u201d she breaks off, and adds: \u201cThey have to think, and nickels have to drop. I think that\u2019s my niche, in a way, the inner dialogue, and I\u2019m figuring things out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMaybe Smith-Cameron can manifest that next because there\u2019s a surge for great roles for women in their 60s, and she hopes to ride the wave.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe\u2019s seen a shift in roles for older women with Smart, Kathy Bates, Allison Janney and Mariska Hargitay leading the way. \u201cThere are so many great actresses in my food chain that are underused,\u201d she says, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s still surprising and fun to see a woman of a certain age not playing a grandmother, not playing a mother, not playing a battle axe boss because women of that age have a huge arsenal of life experience and brains.\u201d<\/p>\n
