\n\tCelebrated Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke will next direct \u201cMamma Dunhuang,\u201d reteaming with French production and sales banner MK2 Films. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe latter, spearheaded by Nathanael and Elisha Karmitz, co-produces \u201cMamma Dunhuang,\u201d in partnership with the director\u2019s Chinese production company Xstream Pictures. It will begin shooting this winter.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMamma Dunhuang\u201d\u00a0tells the story of a mother who has spent most of her life in Dunhuang, a historic city in western China. With the help of artificial intelligence, she embarks on a journey that takes her from western to eastern China.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film stars Zhao Tao, winner of the David di Donatello Award for best actress, and Liao Fan, winner of the Silver Bear for best actor at Berlin. Both actors previously collaborated with Zhangke on his 2018 feature\u00a0\u201cAsh Is Purest White.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJia Zhangke has been developing this project with us for the past two years,\u201d said Nathana\u00ebl Karmitz, mk2 Films CEO. \u201cWith\u00a0\u2018Mamma Dunhuang,\u2019 he take us deep into the heart of China and into unmapped cinematic territory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZhangke is a leading Chinese auteur whose work has been embraced at film festivals and beyond. He\u2019s attending Cannes this year with \u201cTorino Shadow,\u201d a short that he\u2019s presenting at Cannes Classics alongside MK2 Films. His relationship with MK2 Films spans nearly two decades and multiple Cannes contenders, including \u201cI Wish I Knew\u201d which played at Un Certain Regard; and a string of Palme d\u2019Or contenders: \u201cA Touch of Sin,\u201d which won best screenplay; \u201cMountains May Depart,\u201d \u201cAsh Is Purest White\u201d and \u201cCaught by the Tides.\u201d The director is back on the Croisette this year with his short \u201cTorino Shadow\u201d which plays at Cannes Classics and is handled by MK2 FIlms. <\/p>\n

\n\tMK2 Films is at Cannes with 11 features across the official selection, including five in competition: Marie Kreutzer\u2019s \u201cGentle Monster,\u201d\u00a0L\u00e9a Mysius\u2019 \u201cThe Birthday Party,\u201d Andrey Zvyagintsev\u2019s \u201cMinotaur,\u201d Ira Sachs\u2019 \u201cThe Man I Love\u201d and\u00a0Koji Fukada\u2019s \u201cNagi Notes.\u201d<\/p>\n
