\nJodie Foster reminisced about her time playing 12-year-old prostitute Iris in \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d alongside Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Paul Schrader during the film\u2019s 50th anniversary reunion at the Tribeca Festival. One memory that remains \u201cseared in [her] memory\u201d is arriving on set and finding Scorsese and De Niro unable to stop giggling as they tried to explain how to unzip De Niro\u2019s pants for a provocative scene.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarty was trying to explain to me how I was supposed to pull down [De Niro\u2019s] fly. They couldn\u2019t stop giggling, and Bob\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m gonna tell her.\u2019 He would try to tell me what to do, and then he would start giggling,\u201d Foster recalled Friday night at the OKX Theater in lower Manhattan. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t give me a note because they were just so nervous that I was so young.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the laughter continued, Foster took matters into her own hands. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Well, you just want me to- okay, fine! First I pull down the fly, then I do this and I walk over there. What\u2019s the big deal?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalf a century later, Foster\u2019s confidence and command of a room remain intact. One of the night\u2019s biggest laughs came when she politely (and directly) called out Schrader for beginning to answer a question without using his microphone. \u201cHe might be sitting on it!\u201d Scorsese quipped. (Sure enough, he was). <\/p>\n

This self-assurance is what impressed Scorsese the moment they met in his office before production began on the 1974 comedy \u201cAlice Doesn\u2019t Live Here Anymore.\u201d Foster was just 11 years old and still wearing her school uniform, but she made it clear that she already had eight years of acting experience under her belt.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou just sat down [and said], \u2018Yeah, I can do that. Okay, I got it. No problem,’\u201d Scorsese recalled, mimicking her matter-of-fact attitude. \u201c\u2018What are you doing next?’\u201d he asked, to which she said, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m doing this other thing over at Disney.’\u201d Foster giggled beside him, scrunching her shoulders and squirming in her seat as if she transported back to Scorsese\u2019s set all those years ago. \u201cShe had an authority \u2014 I\u2019m not kidding \u2014 an authority,\u201d Scorsese concluded. \u201cShe was really quite supportive, if you could put it that way, because it was a hard shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring her January cover story interview with Variety<\/em>, Foster said she\u2019s always found working with male directors \u201ckind of simple.\u201d Her philosophy, as she put it: \u201cYou tell me what you want; I do it.\u201d Her passion for cinema began with trips to the theater alongside her mother, where she was introduced to European, French New Wave and Japanese cinema. Yet it was De Niro\u2019s slow-motion saunter into Tony\u2019s bar in \u201cMean Streets\u201d (set to the beat of Rolling Stones\u2019 \u201cJumpin\u2019 Jack Flash\u201d) that crystallized her ambitions.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe truth is, I saw \u2018Mean Streets\u2019 when I was a kid \u2026 and that was it,\u201d Foster said, smiling toward De Niro. \u201cI just wanted to be a part of this. Anything that you would have offered me, I would have done.\u201d She then sprang from her seat and turned toward Scorsese. \u201cIn fact, I think I tried to be an extra in \u2018New York, New York,\u2019 but it didn\u2019t work out because I was under 16 and they wouldn\u2019t let me work at night.\u201d<\/p>\n
