\nAri Aster said during a Q&A after an Egyptian Theatre screening of \u201cHereditary\u201d (via Gold Derby) that he wrote a prequel to his 2018 horror hit, but doesn\u2019t have any plans to shoot it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wrote a prequel to this,\u201d Aster said on Sunday night. \u201cIt never feels like the right time. It\u2019s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don\u2019t know where this goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHereditary\u201d was Aster\u2019s feature directorial debut, and it put him on the map as a must-watch filmmaker in the horror genre. Starring Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne, \u201cHereditary\u201d follows the Graham family, whose unassuming life begins to violently unravel after the death of the reclusive grandmother.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Aster\u2019s movies, along with those of directors like Jordan Peele and Robert Eggers, are often labeled as \u201celevated horror,\u201d this is a moniker Aster rejects. He explained during the same interview, \u201cI hate the term elevated horror, especially because it\u2019s sort of a box that I was put in and horror fans took umbrage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAster later explained that Danny DeVito tried to finance \u201cHereditary,\u201d but he couldn\u2019t find the cash to do so. The unnamed financier Aster eventually chose, he explained, put him through \u201cone of the darkest times of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was just in the hands of a financier that was, how do we say it? Worse,\u201d Aster explained. \u201cI\u2019m afraid to say the name because he might show up in my life. Really a nightmare who I had signed my life away, I had signed the film away to him. He had me in the palm of his hand. It was one of the darkest times of my life, actually finishing this film and trying to protect it, keep it from just blowing up.\u201d<\/p>\n
