\n\tSouth Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), which unveiled its full program lineup Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe festival runs July 18\u201325 and will present 65 films from 35 countries and regions in 27 languages, including two world premieres, one international premiere, three Asian premieres, 12 Southeast Asian premieres and 28 Malaysian premieres.<\/p>\n

\n\tMIFFest president Joanne Goh described the director as \u201ca filmmaker whose work continues to resonate across cultures and generations through its honesty, compassion, and profound understanding of humanity.\u201d The tribute will include screenings of two of Lee\u2019s films: \u201cPeppermint Candy,\u201d a reverse-chronological drama examining personal and national trauma, and \u201cOasis,\u201d a romance centred on love, isolation and human dignity.<\/p>\n

\n\tChinese actor-director Wu Jing will receive the festival\u2019s Excellent Achievement in Film Award. The program will screen \u201cBlades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert,\u201d directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, in conjunction with the honor.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 9th edition opens with the world premiere of Malaysian feature \u201cBAGA: Tomorrow Belongs To No One,\u201d directed by Ariff Zulkarnain. Set in a conservative fishing village in Kuala Terengganu, the film follows a boatman struggling with addiction and a batik artisan whose lives intersect after an unplanned pregnancy. Closing the festival is \u201cYellow Letters,\u201d directed by \u0130lker \u00c7atak, which won the Golden Bear at the 76th Berlin Film Festival. The film tracks a Turkish artist couple whose lives come apart after their new production draws state scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe International Competition section \u2013 reserved for directors with three or fewer narrative features \u2013 brings together 10 films. The Malaysian entry is Lau Kek-Huat\u2019s \u201cThe Waves Will Carry Us.\u201d Other titles include \u201cAh Girl\u201d (Singapore), directed by Ang Geck Geck Priscilla; \u201cAisha Can\u2019t Fly Away\u201d (Egypt\/France\/Germany), directed by Morad Mostafa; \u201cBecoming Human\u201d (Cambodia), directed by Polen Ly; \u201cBroken Voices\u201d (Czech Republic), directed by Ond\u0159ej Provazn\u00edk; \u201cGirl\u201d (Taiwan), directed by Shu Qi; New York-set survival drama \u201cLucky Lu\u201d (U.S.\/Canada), directed by Lloyd Lee Choi; Sri Lankan film \u201cRiverstone,\u201d directed by Lalith Rathnayake; \u201cSilent Rebellion\u201d (Switzerland\/Belgium\/France), directed by Marie-Elsa Sgualdo; and \u201cThe Red Hangar\u201d (Chile\/Argentina\/Italy), directed by Juan Pablo Sallato. <\/p>\n

\n\tJury president is Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, joined by Taiwanese director Midi Z, Thai actor-producer Ananda Everingham, Hong Kong production designer Man Lim-chung and Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani.<\/p>\n

\n\tTwo new program strands make their MIFFest debut this year. Korean Cinema: A Culture in Motion presents \u201cBluefish,\u201d directed by Lee Sang-hoon, alongside \u201cMr. Kim Goes to the Cinema,\u201d directed by Busan International Film Festival founder Kim Dong-ho, who has served as MIFFest\u2019s honorary chairman for nine years. Russian Film Week, presented with the Russian Ministry of Culture and Roskino, offers five titles ranging from Andrei Tarkovsky\u2019s \u201cAndrey Rublev\u201d and Mikhail Kalatozov\u2019s \u201cThe Cranes Are Flying\u201d to contemporary productions including \u201cSidney Lumet\u2019s Birthday\u201d and \u201cFamily Happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReturning strands include ASEAN On Screen, now in its second year, with six films from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore; Hong Kong Cinema in Flux, headlined by \u201cCiao UFO,\u201d winner of multiple awards at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards; and New Rhythms of Indian Cinema, which pairs Ramesh Sippy\u2019s \u201cSholay\u201d and Kashyap\u2019s \u201cBlack Friday\u201d with three contemporary regional works.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Open Air Cinema returns to the Sunken Garden at MyTown Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur, featuring a selection of Malaysian films and nine short films presented with the Raintown Film Festival. The festival also unveiled \u201cImpian Di Seoul,\u201d the second season of its K-Style microdrama series, produced with Korean lifestyle partner Nongshim.<\/p>\n
