{"id":1685,"date":"2026-06-09T17:07:48","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T17:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=1685"},"modified":"2026-06-09T17:07:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T17:07:48","slug":"argentinas-sebastian-de-caro-sets-spin-off-of-joe-begos-horror-pic-jimmy-and-stiggs-released-by-eli-roths-the-horror-section-exclusive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=1685","title":{"rendered":"Argentina\u2019s Sebasti\u00e1n De Caro Sets Spin-Off of Joe Begos\u2019 Horror Pic \u2018Jimmy and Stiggs,\u2019 Released by Eli Roth\u2019s The Horror Section (EXCLUSIVE)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tThe Argentine spin-off rights to \u201cJimmy and Stiggs\u201d \u2013 the neon-drenched, practical-effects-laden alien horror film written, directed by and starring Joe Begos and released by Eli Roth\u2018s The Horror Section, have been optioned by Sebasti\u00e1n De Caro, who will direct the project.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=1683\">\u2018The Paper\u2019 Star Domhnall Gleeson on Becoming a Folk Hero for Journalists \u2014 and the \u2018Sad Aspect to It\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tRather than a straight remake, the film will follow new characters facing the same extraterrestrial threat in Argentina, expanding the universe Begos created into new territory.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cJimmy and Stiggs\u201d was featured at the MorbidoGate IP Showcase, one of the signature industry initiatives at the Cannes March\u00e9 du Film\u2019s Fantastic Pavilion, and the spin-off deal was closed days later at the market.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRoth and Begos will serve as executive producers on the project.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cJimmy and Stiggs\u201d premiered at the Beyond Fest in Los Angeles in 2024 and received a nationwide U.S. theatrical release in August 2025 through The Horror Section, Roth\u2019s recently launched genre studio.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShot on 16mm over the course of nearly four years, primarily in Begos\u2019 own Los Angeles apartment, the film follows two estranged friends \u2014 Jimmy, an out-of-work filmmaker convinced he was abducted by aliens, and Stiggs, the sober former partner he reunites with to face the impending extraterrestrial threat.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDescribed as a \u201ccontained, visceral, ferociously funny sci-fi horror built on practical effects and raw energy,\u201d the film was hailed by critics as a cult classic in the making. The Los Angeles Times called it \u201cpure exhilaration,\u201d while Bloody Disgusting described it as \u201cplayful, gonzo, small-scale-yet-apocalyptic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe film went on to demonstrate its international appeal at Spain\u2019s Sitges Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tArgentina is the first territory to expand on the film\u2019s premise, which could be considered a high-concept, universally translatable IP that travels across languages, cultures and markets: two men, one apartment, an alien siege.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cJimmy and Stiggs\u201d was the first acquisition for The Horror Section, launched by Roth last year as a company focused on the ownership and control of a premium intellectual property library of genre films, television series and games.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Horror Section\u2019s upcoming slate includes Roth\u2019s \u201cIce Cream Man,\u201d set for theatrical release on Aug. 7, and \u201cDon\u2019t Go in That House, Bitch!\u201d with Snoop Dogg on board as writer, producer and soundtrack performer.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMorbidoGate, the strategic alliance between Globalgate Entertainment \u2013 the local-language film and TV production consortium formed by Lionsgate and 14 leading international entertainment companies \u2013 and Mexico City-based Grupo M\u00f3rbido, Latin America\u2019s leading fantastic cinema platform, operates its annual IP Showcase as part of the Fantastic Pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe initiative connects genre IP holders with producers across key international markets. The showcase\u2019s previous edition produced \u201cCam Sehpa\u201d (\u201cThe Turkish Coffee Table\u201d), the Turkish spin-off of the acclaimed Spanish horror film \u201cThe Coffee Table\u201d and the first project to emerge from MorbidoGate. De Caro\u2019s credits as a filmmaker include \u201cRockabilly,\u201d \u201cVacaciones en la Tierra,\u201d \u201cRecortadas,\u201d \u201c20.000 Besos,\u201d \u201cClaudia\u201d \u2014 which opened the 2019 Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema \u2014 and most recently \u201cMatrimillas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe has also published multiple novels with Penguin Random House\u2019s Reservoir Books imprint, including \u201cLas nuevas aventuras de un bi\u00f3logo reci\u00e9n recibido,\u201d \u201cLa flor m\u00e1s falsa del mundo\u201d and the Charles Manson essay \u201cCielo Drive,\u201d alongside comic books and pop cultural essays that have established him as one of Argentina\u2019s sharpest chroniclers of contemporary culture.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDe Caro will also co-write the screenplay alongside Mat\u00edas Orta with the aim of bringing a distinctly Argentine voice to the project\u2019s expansion of the \u201cJimmy and Stiggs\u201d universe.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWorking with Eli Roth and Joe Begos is an incredibly exciting adventure,\u201d De Caro said. \u201c\u2018Jimmy and Stiggs\u2019 struck me as a brilliant kind of madness \u2014 it blew my mind with its energy and humor \u2014 and the chance to expand that universe in my own country is the biggest creative challenge I\u2019ve ever taken on. Alongside Eli Roth, Joe Begos and MorbidoGate, this is a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRoth likewise expressed his admiration for the Argentine multi-hyphenate: \u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of Seba de Caro and the team at MorbidoGate, and \u2018Jimmy and Stiggs\u2019 is the perfect template for how we see films from The Horror Section.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cHorror is truly global, and any story can be applied to local culture. I cannot wait to see how this film honors and expands the universe of a wildly original film by the one and only Joe Begos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFor Pablo Guisa Koestinger, executive director of the Fantastic Pavilion and CEO of Morbido Group, the deal has further cemented the role of the genre hub at the Cannes market. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe goal of the IP Showcase at Cannes is to strengthen the fantastic film industry by connecting IP that can travel \u2014 and genre doesn\u2019t need a visa,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cFirst we took a Spanish film to Turkey, now we\u2019re taking an American film to Argentina.
