\n\tThe Art Directors Guild released a statement on social media on Tuesday condemning Martin Scorsese\u2019s recent partnership with AI startup Black Forest Labs. In the statement, the guild accused one of Hollywood\u2019s most celebrated directors of \u201cturning his back on the human artists who throughout his career have helped him create his most memorable works.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn the recently released Black Forest Labs video promoting their generative AI product FLUX, Mr. Scorsese asks the question, \u2018how do you communicate what you see in your head to your cast and crew?\u2019 He claims the solution is the use of this generative AI program to do the jobs that are rightfully the jurisdiction of Art Directors Guild Local 800 artists and designers \u2013 human artists and designers who have been successfully collaborating with directors to visualize their films for decades,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cMr. Scorsese\u2019s promotion of a generative AI product circumvents the input of Art Directors Guild Local 800 art directors, graphic artists, illustrators, production designers, scenic artists, set designers, and other talented Union professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReps for Scorsese did not immediately respond to Variety<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn June 2, Black Forest Labs unveiled Scorsese as its new advisor in an effort to \u201cpush the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences.\u201d In his own statement, posted on the Black Forest website, Scorsese said cinema \u201cis a young medium\u201d and that filmmakers \u201chave to be open to how it can evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tScorsese continued, \u201cI utilized 3D with \u2018Hugo\u2019 and de-aging technology for \u2018The Irishman.\u2019 Now, with this tool, I can share what I\u2019m visualizing more clearly and efficiently to my creative team \u2014 the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer \u2014 for them to build on to enrich cinematic intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Art Directors Guild isn\u2019t the only Hollywood voice calling out Scorsese for embracing AI. On June 3, \u201cI Love Boosters\u201d director Boots Riley wrote on X that he thought the \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d director partnered with Black Forest Labs for finacial reasons. He also wrote that Scorsese probably \u201cdoesn\u2019t give a fuck\u201d since he thinks AI will \u201cfall on its face anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
