\nClaire Danes got some very valuable advice from a future Oscar winner.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn her Variety <\/em>Actors on Actors conversation with \u201cHalf Man\u201d star Richard Gadd, the \u201cThe Beast in Me\u201d performer reminisced about shooting 1996\u2019s \u201cRomeo + Juliet\u201d with Leonardo DiCaprio. While the shoot \u2014 like the film \u2014 was emotionally intense, Danes, at 17, tried to lighten the mood by playing with an onset firearm just before shooting her death scene. (Juliet, finding Romeo dead by self-inflicted poison, sobs and shoots herself in the head.) \u201cI remember just blithely playing with the prop gun and putting it to my head, and Leo getting very serious and saying, \u2018Claire, we don\u2019t do that. Don\u2019t eff around,\u2019\u201d Danes recalls. \u201cHe was right, but I was just being a doofus and a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSafety with prop firearms has received new attention in the years since the tragic onset shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021 on the set of the film \u201cRust.\u201d And DiCaprio \u2014 who\u2019s worked with guns in films like \u201cThe Revenant\u201d and \u201cThe Departed\u201d \u2014 was already aware of taking special caution even in his Romeo days. DiCaprio, 21 during the shoot, was already a seasoned pro, having received an Oscar nomination for \u201cWhat\u2019s Eating Gilbert Grape,\u201d but Danes was no slouch, having led the ABC drama \u201cMy So-Called Life\u201d and earned an Emmy nomination. The emotional intensity of the shoot was perhaps new for her, though, and it brought something out of Danes: Gadd told her that he\u2019d written a school essay on her \u201cguttural sob\u201d she lets out upon finding Romeo\u2019s body. (Better still, Gadd got a good grade.) \u201cI remember that moment very distinctly,\u201d Danes says. \u201cI was surprised by it. And the environment was so epic that Baz [Luhrmann] had created. I was moved by the mise en sc\u00e8ne, in a way, and the tragedy \u2014 but the world he creates helped elicit that feeling.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDanes, famously, joined \u201cRomeo + Juliet\u201d as a replacement; 14-year-old Natalie Portman, who\u2019d been cast in the role at first, was deemed to read too young on camera opposite her adult male costar. And while her career \u2014 with multiple Emmy wins for \u201cHomeland\u201d and now a much-touted lead on a Netflix hit \u2014 has been one to envy, fans of her pairing with DiCaprio may wonder what might have been. In a 2020 interview, Danes revealed that she\u2019d been pursued to play Rose in \u201cTitanic\u201d but told producers she couldn\u2019t do it. \u201cI was really clear about it, I wasn\u2019t conflicted,\u201d she said then. \u201cI was feeling eager to have different creative experiences and that felt like a repeat and it was going to propel me towards something that I knew I didn\u2019t have the resources to cope with.\u201d<\/p>\n
