Romance makes us feel good.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRomance can have many different definitions, depending on the show \u2014 some filled with emotional arcs, others sharing compelling bedroom stories. For this year\u2019s love-centric titles, those two things go hand in hand. \u201cBridgerton\u201d Season 4 had to tackle the task while also addressing the power difference between Benedict (Luke Thompson), and the maid he falls in love with, Sophie (Yerin Ha).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt was important to see Benedict stepping outside of his privilege and realizing he really needs to take care of Sophie and help her feel safe, which was growth for him and for Sophie,\u201d says showrunner Jess Brownell. \u201cWe wanted to see her owning her desires, taking agency of what she wants and when she wants it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIntimate moments can also be used to set the tone of a story. \u201cRyan [Murphy]\u2019s idea from the beginning was always to make it tasteful and classical,\u201d reveals \u201cLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette\u201d executive producer Brad Simpson. \u201cWe wanted to evoke the love scenes from our favorite movies, and we looked at classic love stories of the \u201970s and \u201980s. Their love scenes would not be chaste, but they didn\u2019t need them to be explicit to make them real.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIntimacy coordinators are a vital part of that process. Lizzy Talbot, who worked on \u201cLove Story,\u201d compares love scenes to any other choreographed pieces that show character growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cYou learn something about the character by the choices they make during these scenes as much as anything else \u2014 perhaps even more so because they are often high stakes and in extremely vulnerable moments,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s physical dialogue because, so often, our actions tell a story our words don\u2019t have the capacity for.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSometimes, being sexy has nothing to do with nudity. It\u2019s a man who\u2019s listening to you,\u201d Foster says. \u201cIt\u2019s not someone who does the generic thing but someone who is paying attention to your wants and needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYou can\u2019t talk about modern romance without considering \u201cthe female gaze.\u201d That doesn\u2019t mean including salacious shots of hot men; instead, it\u2019s about making sure the women\u2019s perspective feels equal, if not paramount, in the storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s about building a sense of yearning and longing, and rooting the attraction between two characters in who they are as people,\u201d Brownell describes. \u201cWatching the physical act of two bodies coming together is not the point for us. It\u2019s about what it feels like, intimately, for the woman and for the man to be in that space.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s important to ground romance in reality, which means detailing the struggles of a relationship and how those issues are navigated.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe obstacles between John and Carolyn were genuine and authentic, and put so much stress on their relationship. It was important to treat them as real people with real problems,\u201d explains \u201cLove Story\u201d co-boss Nina Jacobson. \u201cWe definitely made the choice that they would find a way back to each other, even with all that came between them. That was the optimism and the earnestness that we wanted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFoster adds, \u201cFinding romance in the sweetness of your life and in the mundaneness, and being in it with somebody else \u2014 that\u2019s the healthiest kind of love story to tell.
