\n\tBanu S\u0131vac\u0131\u2019s \u201cHear the Yellow\u201d has swept the main awards at this year\u2019s Taormina Film Festival. The drama, which started its festival journey in Berlin back in February, was elected Best Film and Best Script at the Sicilian event, with its leads S\u00fcleyman Kadim Kabaali and\u00a0 Selva Erdener winning Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHear the Yellow\u201d is S\u0131vac\u0131\u2019s sophomore effort. The drama follows young Suna, who returns to her small Turkish village to find it riven with cracks caused by draught. Her parental home is as fragile as relationships between the locals, but Suna persists in shining a light into the past\u2019s dark corners. S\u0131vac\u0131\u2019s feature debut, \u201cThe Pigeon,\u201d also premiered in Berlin, back in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s jury at Taormina was presided over by New Zealand director Jane Campion, alongside her \u201cThe Piano\u201d lead Holly Hunter, costume designer Miyako Bellizzi, casting director Francine Maisler, breakout director Akinola Davies Jr. (\u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow\u201d), Amazon MGM Studios\u2019 head of global marketing Sue Kroll, and Italian actor\/director Pietro Castellitto. Other major names to touch down in the Italian town include Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren, Connie Nielsen, Scott Eastwood, Aaron Paul, Nina Dobrev, Sam Nivola, Clive Owen and Gore Verbinski.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Campion-led jury also awarded Greta Scarano\u2019s performance in Guido Chiesa\u2019s \u201cPiccolo Miracolo,\u201d giving her a Best Actress award ex-aequo. Tut Nyuot won Best Emerging Actor for Ashley Walters\u2019 prison drama \u201cAnimol,\u201d while Berfin S\u00f6nmez won Best Emerging Actress for Ben Voit\u2019s \u201cGropiusstadt Supernova.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Taormina Youth Campus, which is composed of over 300 students and 25 young jurors and held in collaboration with ANEC Sicilia and AGIS Sicilia, awarded Gore Verbinski\u2019s genre-bending sci-fi \u201cGood Luck, Have Fun, Don\u2019t Die\u201d with this year\u2019s Golden Cariddino. \u201cPiccolo Miracolo\u201d won a special mention. The ARCA award for Best Short Film went to Fabio Schifilliti\u2019s \u201cFili Invisibili.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 72nd edition of the star-studded Italian fete opened with the Italian premiere of HBO\u2019s \u201cHouse of the Dragon,\u201d screened in the town\u2019s imposing ancient Greek theater. Other highlights include the world premiere of Derrick Borte\u2019s \u201cBear Country\u201d starring Russell Crowe, who also gave a masterclass where he spoke about his upcoming role in Chad Stahelski\u2019s \u201cHighlander\u201d reboot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOther Taormina competition titles included dissident Iranian filmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi\u2019s potent drama \u201cRoya,\u201d about an Iranian teacher detained in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison, and Michael Gallagher\u2019s \u201cThe Leader,\u201d starring Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga in the true story of the cult known as Heaven\u2019s Gate, which convinced dozens to abandon their lives and await evacuation from planet Earth.
