{"id":2165,"date":"2026-06-15T07:05:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T07:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=2165"},"modified":"2026-06-15T07:05:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T07:05:38","slug":"rory-kinnear-to-play-john-maynard-keynes-in-james-grahams-the-standard-of-living-with-the-royal-ballets-natalia-osipova-making-her-west-end-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=2165","title":{"rendered":"Rory Kinnear to Play John Maynard Keynes in James Graham\u2019s \u2018The Standard of Living,\u2019 With the Royal Ballet\u2019s Natalia Osipova Making Her West End Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\nRory Kinnear will play economist and Bloomsbury Group figure John Maynard Keynes in the world premiere of \u201cThe Standard of Living,\u201d a new play by three-time Olivier Award winner James Graham, producers Brian and Dayna Lee and director Nicholas Hytner revealed Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=2163\">Shanghai Film Festival Head Charts an Eclectic 28th Edition: \u2018Great Stories Are What Truly Connect\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tRoyal Ballet principal Natalia Osipova, making her West End debut, will star alongside him as ballet dancer Lydia Lopokova.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe production will run for 12 weeks at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London, with previews beginning Sept. 21, opening night set for Sept. 29 and a final performance on Dec. 12. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tGraham\u2019s play follows Keynes as he moves between government corridors and the orbit of a radical circle of artists, writers and lovers \u2013 including his relationship with painter Duncan Grant and friendship with Virginia Woolf \u2013 while markets crash and old financial systems buckle around him. The play also takes in his romance with and eventual marriage to Lopokova, who was a soloist with Diaghilev\u2019s Ballets Russes before becoming a celebrated figure in British ballet history.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe creative team also includes set designer Bob Crowley, an Olivier Award winner whose credits include \u201cGiant\u201d and \u201cThe Inheritance.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe production is also co-presented by Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment, with Mark Rubinstein serving as executive producer and Short Street Productions Ltd handling general management.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGraham said: \u201cThe extraordinary life of one of the 20th Century\u2019s most impactful and yet \u2013 today \u2013 rarely talked about figures crosses so many of my favorite worlds to depict: politics, economics, the arts, diplomacy. I\u2019m in playwrighting heaven. Lydia Lopokova was a pivotal figure in ballet history, bridging Diaghilev\u2019s legendary Ballets Russes and the development of British ballet last century, and I can\u2019t wait to explore her character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBrian and Dayna Lee said: \u201cJames has the exceptional ability to distill pivotal political, social and historical events into riveting and life-altering theatre, and what he has done with the story of John Maynard Keynes is no exception. We are delighted to be working with James and collaborating once again with the brilliant Nicholas Hytner to bring this extraordinary piece of bold original writing direct to the West End and share the little known story of the man who made it possible for theater and art of all kinds to flourish in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGraham\u2019s recent stage work includes \u201cPunch,\u201d which transferred from the Young Vic to the West End and then Broadway, and \u201cDear England,\u201d his Olivier-winning portrait of England football manager Gareth Southgate, which ran at the National Theatre and subsequently toured nationally. Kinnear, known to film audiences for his role as Bill Tanner across three James Bond features, won the Olivier Award for Best Actor for \u201cOthello\u201d at the National Theatre in 2014.
