\n\tAfter the massive success of Canadian romantic drama series \u201cSullivan\u2019s Crossing\u201d \u2014 which was recently renewed for a fifth season \u2014 Fremantle, Bell Media and Reel World Management knew they\u2019d found a rare partnership.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWithin the first year of \u2018Sullivan\u2019s Crossing,\u2019 you\u2019re kind of dating,\u201d Michela Di Mondo, Fremantle\u2019s executive vice president of distribution for Canada, tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cAnd early on, we realized that we were in marriage territory, so we knew that there was a willingness to look at the next project.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tA follow-up was kind of a no-brainer, especially factoring in that \u201cSullivan\u2019s\u201d sold in over 180 territories for Fremantle and became CTV\u2019s No. 1 original drama as well as The CW\u2019s top-rated scripted series in the U.S. Plus, showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth \u2014 who had worked closely with New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr on adapting \u201cSullivan\u2019s\u201d and \u201cVirgin River\u201d for the screen \u2014 had already acquired the rights for her nine-novel \u201cThunder Point\u201d saga.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis will be my third collaboration with Robyn Carr,\u201d Roth says, who will executive produce \u201cThunder Point\u201d alongside Reel World\u2019s Christopher E. Perry in association with Fremantle and CTV. \u201cIt\u2019s been a wonderful\u202frelationship. She supports my creative vision and in return the success of my shows has helped expand her global audience. It\u2019s a win\/win scenario for both of us. I was equally as fortunate to partner with Bell Media and Fremantle \u2014 two companies that recognized my potential and offered me the support and freedom I needed to develop a\u202fhit series.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to the book series\u2019 logline, \u201cThunder Point\u201d follows Hank Cooper \u2014 a handsome but rugged veteran who is briefly introduced in the \u201cVirgin River\u201d book \u201cSunrise Point\u201d \u2014 who arrives to a coastal town after learning he\u2019s been left an old friend\u2019s beachfront property. When Hank decides to stick around, he finds that the destiny of this small community rests in his hands. <\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough \u201cThunder Point\u201d stays true to the romance Carr is known for, the story also has sports and mystery elements. \u201cIt\u2019s the story of a small coastal town that\u2019s very involved in their local high school sports, both the social and competitive world,\u201d Carr says. \u201cIt\u2019s \u2018Friday Night Lights\u2019 meets \u2018Virgin River.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this month, the 10-episode series was officially announced at Bell Media\u2019s upfronts, which drew an unprecedented amount of attention after smash-hit hockey romance series \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d an original for its streaming service Crave. On the heels of the Bell announcement, Di Mondo says she\u2019s \u201cnever had so much proactive reach-out before, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFollowing the phenomenal success of\u202f\u2019Sullivan\u2019s Crossing,\u2019 we knew we had to reunite this exceptional creative team to bring \u2018Thunder Point\u2019 to life,\u201d says Carlyn Klebuc, general manager of original programming for Bell Media. \u201cCollaborating with our outstanding partners at Fremantle and the immensely talented Roma Roth to adapt another of Robyn Carr\u2019s beloved worlds is a winning formula for CTV and Crave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFremantle is handling international sales on the series, and Di Mondo says other partners are eager to get on board sooner rather than later. \u201cThe idea is when you come in early \u2014 and that\u2019s why these conversations are happening early \u2014 you shape it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re part of the dialogue of casting, of leaning into this story or this character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough the team is coming into \u201cThunder Point\u201d with the prerequisites for success, Di Mondo says it was also important that they weren\u2019t just doing the same thing over again. This \u201cpoint of difference,\u201d as she calls it, comes with the mystery aspect to the series.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat will be a really nice addition is this mystery component to it, because the environment will be a big factor to that mystery,\u201d she teases. \u201c\u2018Thunder Point,\u2019 for us, combines everything buyers are looking for. It\u2019s beloved IP, it\u2019s premium production value, it\u2019s mystery, it\u2019s romance, it\u2019s world audiences. It\u2019s something you want to return to again and again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRight now, Di Mondo says the team is diving into the books and figuring out the storytelling, but casting buzz is already starting. \u201cPeople are already giving me casting [ideas], like, \u2018I want the lead to be X,’\u201d she says. \u201cTwo of them I was like, yes please! We\u2019re excited to have those conversations in the global market.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMore than anything, the continued success of \u201cSullivan\u2019s Crossing\u201d and excitement around \u201cThunder Point\u201d underlines the huge moment Canadian drama is having right now on a global scale.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ll never forget being in a meeting and someone\u2019s like, \u2018Ugh, Canada\u2019s here.\u2019 And now it\u2019s a little like, \u2018Canada\u2019s here!’\u201d Di Mondo says. \u201cWe\u2019re just as equally relevant as the U.K. and U.S. \u2014 it\u2019s not a stigma. We\u2019re gonna be a little bit unabashedly proud now, and just lean in. We\u2019re leaning in on the romance, we\u2019re leaning in on the location, we\u2019re leaning in on the mystery. This is the fun part of having a track record of proven success.\u201d<\/p>\n
