The country\u2019s grand vistas have provided epic backdrops for such films as David Lean\u2019s \u201cLawrence of Arabia\u201d; Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade\u201d; Ridley Scott\u2019s \u201cThe Martian\u201d; Gareth Edwards\u2019 \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story\u201d; Chad Stahelski\u2019s \u201cJohn Wick 4\u201d; and Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune\u201d films.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEarlier this year, Prashanth Neel\u2019s upcoming Indian action saga \u201cDragon\u201d shot key scenes Wadi Rum and in the port city of Aqaba.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFurther bolstering the country as a prime location is the new Olivewood Film Studios, located in Amman. The first purpose-built complex of its kind in Jordan comprises two soundstages and a backlot.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOne of the most recent domestic films to shoot at the facility was \u201cGrant Me a Son,\u201d by Jordanian sibling filmmakers Rana and Ahmad Al-Yaseer, the duo behind the acclaimed, award-winning short \u201cOur Males and Females.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAhmad Al-Yaseer, whose credits also include the 2019 mystery series \u201cWeapon Without Murder,\u201d extols the local industry, stressing that Jordan \u201cis an excellent hub for production services. Between the attractive rebate system, experienced crews, high-quality facilities, diverse locations, and favorable weather throughout the year, it has become a very strong destination for both local and international productions.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe increased support and infrastructure are definitely creating more opportunities for Jordanian filmmakers while also helping attract major international projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIndeed, Jordan\u2019s filmmaking prowess left a strong impression on Gianluca Chakra, the Dubai-based producer of Zaid Abu Hamdan\u2019s crime thriller \u201cBoomah,\u201d which world premieres in the Shanghai Film Festival\u2019s Asian New Talent Selection.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cJordan has spent decades building a filmmaking ecosystem that is often underestimated from the outside,\u201d says Chakra, whose Front Row Productions produced \u201cBoomah\u201d along with Ahmad Abu Koush\u2019s Bounce Productions. \u201cMost people immediately think of the country\u2019s extraordinary locations, but what impressed me most was the depth of experience within the local crews and filmmaking community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe had crew members who had worked on productions such as \u2018Dune,\u2019 \u2018John Wick,\u2019 \u2018The Martian,\u2019 \u2018Prometheus,\u2019 \u2018Transformers,\u2019 \u2018The Hurt Locker\u2019 and \u2018Zero Dark Thirty.\u2019 These are professionals who have spent years working alongside some of the best filmmakers in the world and who bring an extraordinary level of expertise, discipline and problem solving to every production. That is one of Jordan\u2019s greatest strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tChakra points out that Jordan, through decades of servicing major international productions, \u201chas developed a highly skilled workforce whose expertise is now sought after across the region. Jordan has spent decades navigating the economic, political and humanitarian consequences of instability across the region, yet it has continued to invest in culture, creativity and storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShooting his latest film, \u201cGrant Me a Son,\u201d at Olivewood proved a great experience for Al-Yaseer.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe upcoming feature, which centers on a woman who goes into labor following a tragic sexual assault, stars Maria Zreik (\u201cAll That\u2019s Left of You\u201d), Shafiqa Al Tal (\u201cWeapon Without Murder,\u201d \u201cOur Males and Females\u201d), Maisa Abdel Hadi (\u201cThe Alleys\u201d) and Motaz Allabadi (\u201cWeapon Without Murder,\u201d \u201cOur Males and Females\u201d). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAl-Yaseer, who has shot countless productions at Olivewood, describes the studio as his \u201cpreferred location for any project, whether it\u2019s a music video, a TV commercial or a film.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWhen you shoot in a studio, you have much more control over the creative process and the surrounding circumstances. It elevates the work and gives you an incredible amount of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith the film set entirely inside a house, the director was able to shoot it all at the studio, which allowed him complete control of creative elements that would not have been possible outside a studio environment.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBuilding and shooting the house in a studio allowed us to work at a level of precision that is much closer to Hollywood-style filmmaking, where every wall, doorway, light source and camera position can be designed to serve the story. It gave us complete control over the visual language of the film and the freedom to execute creative choices that would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, in a practical location.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt was a fantastic experience,\u201d he adds. \u201cOlivewood has everything a production needs.
