\nAmanda Seyfried revealed in a recent British GQ profile that she had to hire a bodyguard after she called Charlie Kirk \u201chateful\u201d shortly after the Turning Point USA co-founder was shot and killed last year. Seyfried\u2019s comment ignited outrage from conservatives on social media.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA, I\u2019m allowed to fucking voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that\u2019s not unkind necessarily,\u201d Seyfried said looking back at the ordeal. \u201cBut there\u2019s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that. I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they\u2019re not harmful. So I\u2019m like, \u2018What do I do? What do I say?\u2019 And then all of a sudden I find myself with a fucking bodyguard at the airport and I\u2019m like, \u2018This is crazy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist, was fatally shot in the neck on Sept. 10 during a college speaking event in Utah. Seyfried originally commented on Kirk\u2019s death by writing: \u201cHe was hateful.\u201d The statement resulted in accusations from many conservatives online that Seyfried thought Kirk\u2019s death was justified. She\u00a0originally responded to the backlash\u00a0in a standalone Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t want to add fuel to a fire. I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse \u2014 isn\u2019t that what we should be having?\u201d Seyfried wrote. \u201cWe\u2019re forgetting the nuance of humanity. I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that\u00a0Charlie Kirk\u2019s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable. No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview with Who What Wear\u00a0a few months later, Seyfried stood up to the backlash by saying \u201cI\u2019m not fucking apologizing\u201d for calling Kirk \u201chateful.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, for fuck\u2019s sake, I commented on\u00a0one<\/em>\u00a0thing. I said something that was based on actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes,\u201d she noted. \u201cWhat I said was pretty damn factual, and I\u2019m free to have an opinion, of course. Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized \u2014 which is what people do, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n
