\n\tTen days into Season 8 of \u201cLove Island USA,\u201d Paralympian and now ex-islander Beatriz Hatz was sent home after her couple was put to the test with a nationwide vote.<\/p>\n

Hatz\u2019s partner, Gabriel Vasconcelos, was made to couple up with bombshell and newcomer Jennifer \u201cJen\u201d Terry after America decided which contestant each of the three new bombshells (Terry, Sol Dean, and Caleb McDaniel) should couple up with.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t surprised once I saw what was going on [in the villa], it was pretty clear,\u201d Hatz tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cI was like, \u2018All right, I\u2019m going home.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Hatz and Vasconcelos were initially paired up on Day 2 when Hatz \u2014 then in a couple with fellow ex-islander Sean Reifel \u2014 signaled she was open to exploring outside her connection. Vasconcelos then stole Hatz and Trinity Tatum away for a date night, where he connected with the former.<\/p>\n

Hatz and Vasconcelos ran into problems of their own, when their connection was tested by the arrivals of Terry and Dean, both of whom Vasconcelos made out with outside of challenges.<\/p>\n

An OG islander, Hatz also quickly struck up friendships with the rest of the women, but hit a snag with Melanie Moreno in Episode 4, when Hatz told Moreno she was hogging a new bombshell\u2019s time and attention, resulting in disagreement between the girls and Moreno\u2019s now popular line: \u201cGimme 10.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the pair made up, they ran into solo hurdles in Episode 9 when Corbin Mims, Hatz and Moreno were all left single and vulnerable after their respective partners were coupled up with the new bombshells. As the sole single man, Mims got to choose which islander he wanted to pair with and picked Moreno, causing Hatz to be dumped from the island.<\/p>\n

In the episodes since, Vasconcelos and Terry\u2019s relationship has picked up steam (the two seemingly had sex in Episode 13), while Hatz\u2019s friends Tatum and Kayda Bosse debate how supportive they should be of the new relationship. The show has also exploded in popularity yet again, with Variety<\/em> reporting that Season 8\u2019s debut had a 74% increase compared to the initial three-day total of minutes watched for the Season 7 premiere. And with extra eyes, comes a new wave of online commentary and criticism. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gotten messages about \u2018We want you and your one leg out of the villa,\u2019 or random stuff like that,\u201d Hatz says. \u201cOK, be more creative if you\u2019re gonna make fun of me.\u201d <\/p>\n

Below, Hatz talked to Variety <\/em>about her friendship with Moreno, how she feels about Vasconcelos\u2019 new coupling \u2014 and her largely unaired connection with McDaniel.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe \u201cLove Island\u201d fandom has basically taken over social media. Once you got your phone back, what was the most surprising about what fans were saying online?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tOh my gosh, getting my phone back was crazy. When I opened the apps, they crashed because I was just getting so many notifications. The craziest thing to see was was probably what my friend told me. She was like, \u2018Yo, people think that you\u2019re gay, and I was like, \u2018Oh, well, I\u2019ll take it as a compliment, it\u2019s not a bad thing, but I just am not?\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\t\tAhead of the Season 8 cast reveal, \u201cLove Island\u201d put out a statement asking to be respectful. Did you feel like people respected that in terms of what they were saying about you? \t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t know, because honestly, people are gonna do what they want to do. Just because you put out an anti-bullying post doesn\u2019t mean people aren\u2019t gonna bully. I\u2019ve gotten messages about \u201cWe want you and your one leg out of the villa,\u201d or random stuff like that. Okay, be more creative if you\u2019re gonna make fun of me.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tSo it doesn\u2019t bother you.\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tNo, I don\u2019t really care, because at the end of the day, people are going to have an opinion, whether it\u2019s good or bad. There\u2019s always going to be an opinion about you, especially when you\u2019re in this type of like space. So people can have their opinions about me, but they don\u2019t know me, and the only opinions that matter are the ones of the people closest to me.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tYou had a tense interaction with Melanie earlier in the season that fans have been quick to dissect. What is your relationship with her truly like?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI think our relationship is fine; it\u2019s a friendship. Friends go through their own little discussions or quarrels, but at the end of day, we squash it. I think people aren\u2019t used to seeing friends communicate and tell their friends, \u201cHey, I didn\u2019t like that,\u201d or, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t think we should be doing this.\u201d I think people just aren\u2019t used to stuff like that, and I\u2019ve learned that maybe my direct communication style is not for everybody. Being outside of this athlete space was something that I had to quickly learn: \u201cOK, I need to still be direct, but also maybe learn how to be direct in a little bit more of a gentle way.\u201d So that\u2019s something that I learned in my time in the villa.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWere there off-screen moments between you that the viewers didn\u2019t see at home?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThere were plenty of off-screen moments, I mean, we\u2019re filmed 24\/7 but the show is only an hour long each episode, so there\u2019s there\u2019s plenty of chats, conversations, funny moments \u2014 maybe like deep emotional connections that we\u2019re not always seeing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWere you surprised that America voted for Gabriel to be with Jen? Why do you think they voted that way?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tNo, I wasn\u2019t surprised. Once I saw what was going on, it was pretty clear. I was like, \u201cAll right, I\u2019m going home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tSo you kind of had a feeling that it was going to go that way. Did you also know that Corbin was going to pick Melanie?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI absolutely knew Corbin was going to pick Melanie for sure. They had other chats, and he and I didn\u2019t really mesh well like that. We didn\u2019t have that same vibe for him to pick me as his connection, so I think that was a pretty like straightforward answer. I know it was probably very difficult though, at the end of the day you are sending somebody home, but it wasn\u2019t surprising. You have to pick your actual connection.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tGoing back to Gabriel, what\u2019s your perspective on his behavior since you left the villa? \t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI mean, at the end of the day, men are gonna do what they want \u2014 or anybody\u2019s gonna do what they want. I\u2019m just glad that I went in there and behaved myself in a way that when I come out I don\u2019t have people saying \u201cOh, what did you do in there?\u201d [Hatz demonstates a wink and nudge]<\/em>. I think everybody\u2019s moving in their own way. I\u2019m not particularly mad, I get it. We\u2019re in the villa, we\u2019re on island time, so you got to be with your couple, but I think I did expect maybe \u2014 well, I didn\u2019t really have any expectations \u2014 but it did catch me off guard when he was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m gonna ask you to like respect this time\u2019 [to Terry, after Hatz was dumped]. I thought he would at least mean for the rest of the night! But good for him for not holding back.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWhat do you think of his and Jen\u2019s connection overall and how quickly it seems to be moving?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t really know what to think of their connection, because I\u2019m not in it. If it\u2019s deep to them, then I guess it\u2019s deep, but I guess anybody could form an opinion outside looking in. I don\u2019t really care to hate on it. I don\u2019t really care to support it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tSean, who you were initially coupled up with, left right before you did. What was it like watching his scenes talking about you? Did you ever regret picking Gabriel over him?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI haven\u2019t fully watched the episodes back quite yet, so I\u2019m not sure what Sean was saying. I don\u2019t know if I could say I fully regret it, I think I do regret a little bit. I didn\u2019t have a full understanding of the challenge. I didn\u2019t think that me standing on the red was gonna be, \u201cHey, you\u2019re out of your couple now,\u201d but I\u2019ve had lots of little conversations with Sean about it, and we have this understanding. And he\u2019s a great guy, amazing guy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tDid you have a connection with anyone else that you wish you had explored?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI think I had a connection with Caleb, we had just a couple chats. I mean, he was fairly new in the villa, and then I got dumped from the island fairly soon after. But the chats I did have with him, and our two kisses in the challenge, I just think that he was such a genuine guy that I wish I would have explored him more, or had the opportunity to explore him more as well.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWhat did you two connect about?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI think it was really easy to open up to him about my disability. I didn\u2019t really tell too many islanders anything super deep. The girls kind of asked questions and I\u2019d tell them, but as for the guys, I think they were very interested in the running blade and how it works, and that was cool to talk to them about. But I was able to quickly open up to Caleb about, \u201cI struggled with this and this,\u201d and during my childhood I had these many surgeries and all these things, and I think he opened up as well with me. He\u2019s just very genuine.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tThere was a bit of a cast shake up before the season even came out. Vasana Montgomery was dismissed for using the n-word, and the OG crew went from eight islanders to six.<\/strong> Did you only find out that there were originally supposed to be eight of you after you left the villa? Were you told while you were still in there?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI found out after we left the villa \u2014 that was kind of crazy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWho were you closest to in the villa? Have you see Trinity and Kayda discussing how to feel about Jen and Gabriel?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tYes! Oh my gosh, Trinity and Kayda are my girls. I cannot wait till they come out. Those were my two closest friends in the villa, and I definitely was more sad about leaving them than, \u201cOh, I\u2019m not on the show anymore.\u201d It\u2019s like, \u201cOK, I don\u2019t care. I miss my friends!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tLooking back, is there anything you would have done anything differently?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t think I would have done anything different, because there\u2019s nothing I can really do different anymore: it is what it is. I think what was supposed to happen, happened. My time in the villa was just enough. I don\u2019t know if I needed to be there any longer, and I think I made the friends and the connections that I needed to, and I wouldn\u2019t have encountered these people otherwise.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tFrom everyone currently in the villa, who has the most genuine connection in your opinion?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI think Bryce and Trinity have the most genuine connection. I literally love them, and they were a slow burn! They started out as like little besties, and now just seeing them and their relationship develop. I was there too, and so seeing that live time was cool and hearing Trinity talk about it was cool and it was just great.<\/p>\n
