\nJames Cameron recently told \u201cThe Empire Film Podcast\u201d that he wants to make his next two \u201cAvatar\u201d sequels in a much shorter time span and for a lot less money.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know, I\u2019ll be doing some writing. I\u2019ve got a number of projects that I\u2019m cooking,\u201d Cameron explained. \u201cAnd \u2018Avatar 4\u2019 and \u20185\u2019 are still floating out there. We\u2019re going to be looking at some new technologies to try to do them more efficiently. Because they\u2019re hideously expensive and take a long time. I want to do them in half the time for two-thirds of the cost. That\u2019s my metric. And so it\u2019s going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAvatar\u201d is the only franchise in which every installment crossed the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The 2009 original grossed $2.7 billion through its original run. The follow-up, \u201cThe Way of Water,\u201d made $2.4 billion, and last year\u2019s \u201cFire and Ash,\u201d earned $1.48 billion. Cameron is most likely reworking his approach in response to the \u201cFire and Ash\u201d fall off. While $1.48 billion would be a lifetime best for most other studios, Disney would\u2019ve liked the \u201cFire and Ash\u201d box office to climb closer to its predecessors, especially considering its $400 million budget and the global marketing campaign, which likely cost hundreds of millions more.<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron told Entertainment Weekly in December 2026 that he would hold a press conference to unveil the plot details of \u201cAvatar 4\u201d and \u201cAvatar 5\u201d if Disney decided to end his sci-fi saga after \u201cFire and Ash.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cBut, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out\u2026 If we don\u2019t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I\u2019ll hold a press conference and I\u2019ll tell you what we were gonna do. How\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n
