\n\t\u201cMinotaur,\u201d a pitch-black look at corruption in Putin era Russia, was greeted with a thunderous, eight-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe film marks the return to the Croisette of Andrey Zvyagintsev, the Oscar-nominated auteur, whose previous films, \u201cThe Banishment,\u201d \u201cLeviathan\u201d and \u201cLoveless\u201d also bowed at Cannes. Zvyagintsev, his eyes misting as the applause in the Lumi\u00e8re Theatre kept building, was flanked by the film\u2019s stars Dmitriy Mazurov and Iris Lebedeva, who play a couple whose marriage is rocked by infidelity and deception. They were also joined in the auditorium by Boris Kudrin, who plays their teenage son Seryozha \u2014 at one point Mazurov tousled Kudrin\u2019s hair.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m grateful to all of you, the audience here at the Lumi\u00e8re theater, for welcoming us so warmly and for giving us the opportunity to make this film and share it with you,\u201d Zvyagintsev told the crowd. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMinotaur\u201d follows \u00a0Gleb (Mazurov)\u00a0a prosperous businessman as he tries to keep his company running smoothly while the authorities keep pressuring him to provide lists of employees they can draft to feed the frontlines of Russia\u2019s war with Ukraine. At the same time, Galina (Lebedeva)\u00a0has embarked on a torrid affair that threatens to destroy the life that Gleb has built. The film was inspired by Claude Chabrol\u2019s \u201cLa femme infid\u00e8le,\u201d which also served as the basis of Adrian Lyne\u2019s \u201cUnfaithful.\u201d Because of its scathing look at Putin-ism, \u201cMinotaur\u201d was shot in Latvia, which doubles for Russia. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMinotaur\u201d marks Zvyagintsev\u2019s return to filmmaking after nearly a decade, a period in which he almost died. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI spent almost one year in a clinic in Germany, where after spending 40 days [in a medically induced] coma I was not able to stand up,\u201d he told Variety<\/em>. \u201cWhen I left the clinic, I moved to France and I decided to stay in France. And more and more, I\u2019m convinced that I should stay here. I have no desire and no interest and no intention to live in a country that\u2019s at war with its neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBased on the reception at Cannes, \u201cMinotaur\u201d seems like a strong contender for the Palme d\u2019Or, alongside the likes of Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski\u2019s \u201cFatherland,\u201d Cristian Mungiu\u2019s \u201cFjord,\u201d and Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s \u201cAll of a Sudden.\u201d<\/p>\n
