Film Festival, where the U.K. filmmaker is on hand to promote his 2025 psychological thriller \u201cBulk,\u201d Wheatley looked back at his comparatively late start as a director \u2014 he was 37 when he released his feature debut, \u201cDown Terrace\u201d \u2014 and joked that he\u2019s \u201ca really bad advert\u201d for making it in the film industry.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201c\u2018Backrooms\u2019 and \u2018Obsession\u2019 and all these movies are proving my route through the industry was not great,\u201d Wheatley said, recalling how he\u2019d promised himself he\u2019d direct his first feature before the age of 40. \u201cIt took me that long to get my shit together. But I couldn\u2019t have done it any other way. It just took me a long time to have the confidence to make something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA director best known for moving fast and making the most of micro budgets \u2014 he shot \u201cDown Terrace\u201d in eight days for just \u00a36,000 \u2014 Wheatley praised the \u201cdemocratization\u201d of the moviemaking process, thanks to the advent of 21st-century technologies like YouTube that have allowed young directors like 21-year-old Kane Parsons (\u201cBackrooms\u201d) and 26-year-old Curry Barker (\u201cObsession\u201d) to go from viral online phenomena to bona fide box-office sensations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStill, the veteran director cautioned that \u201cas much as the technology has advanced, the distribution has not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re still dealing with a distribution system from 20 years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cAs technology has moved on, it\u2019s destroyed great little money earners like DVD and BluRay, which is a shame. There\u2019s less ways of earning money from it at the grassroots than there used to be. But you can make a film. That\u2019s pretty straightforward now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWheatley\u2019s latest, \u201cBulk,\u201d which premiered in the Edinburgh Film Festival\u2019s Midnight Madness strand last year, was described by\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u2019s chief film critic Guy Lodge as a \u201chybrid of conspiracy thriller, time-bending sci-fi and goofy genre parody.\u201d\u00a0In his glowing review out of Edinburgh, Lodge noted that Wheatley was \u201cmischievously [going] back to basics\u201d with his \u201cparanoid lo-fi thriller,\u201d marking the director\u2019s return to the genre-bending, DIY roots that solidified his cult status with films like the 2011 psychological thriller \u201cKill List\u201d and the 2012 dark comedy \u201cSightseers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe movie \u2014 which was quietly shot on a shoestring budget and released just weeks before another Wheatley production, the Bob Odenkirk-starring thriller \u201cNormal,\u201d premiered at Toronto \u2014 marked the follow-up to Wheatley\u2019s surprise turn in the director\u2019s chair for the 2023 Warner Bros. blockbuster \u201cThe Meg 2: The Trench.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFollowing a string of low-budget hits, Wheatley was handed the reins of the sequel to the smash Jason Statham-starring action film about a prehistoric shark run amok in the modern world. (The movie was widely panned by critics \u2014 including <em>Variety<\/em>\u2018s Owen Gleiberman, who called it \u201ca trivial (if not unwatchable) piece of semi-preposterous big-budget junk\u201d \u2014 but still racked up nearly $400 million at the global box office.)<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=2580\">Box Office: \u2018Toy Story 5\u2019 Soars to $71 Million on Opening Day<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tAsked by a Transilvania audience member if he enjoyed more creative freedom working with a studio budget, however, Wheatley pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cHaving more money doesn\u2019t mean you get to do whatever you want. It means you get to do much less than you want,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you make the movie for not much money, you\u2019ve got much less money to get back before everyone gets their money back. And it means your audience can be a lot smaller, and you can make much weirder movies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWhen you take the big money to do a big movie, you\u2019ve got to get a lot of people to watch it, and they don\u2019t like weird stuff and they want to see something more straightforward, like a man punching a shark,\u201d he added. \u201cYour responsibility as a filmmaker is to get the money back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThough Wheatley and Warners might not have seemed like the ideal match on paper, the director \u2014 who confessed he\u2019d heard his share of horror stories of \u201cindie filmmakers getting crushed by the studios\u201d \u2014 insisted he \u201chad a really good time\u201d leaning into the goofy kitsch of the \u201cMeg 2\u201d production.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s very bright colors and it\u2019s funny and it\u2019s got big action in it. And you get to talk to the global audience,\u201d he said. \u201c[Between] doing low-budget or big-budget, I don\u2019t mind either side. I like making films. But you\u2019ve just got to know what audience you\u2019re talking to when you do it. You don\u2019t want to take the shark movie and then try to make some kind of tone poem about your relationship with your father. That\u2019s going to fall on deaf ears, both from the studio and the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWidely credited with helping to revive the \u201cfolk horror\u201d genre established by cult \u201960s and \u201970s movies like \u201cThe Wicker Man,\u201d Wheatley confessed that it\u2019s an even earlier era of moviemaking that he would love to return to.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of Hollywood movies and I\u2019m a big fan of the studio system \u2014 certainly of the \u201940s and \u201950s,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I had a genie and I could do anything, [I like] the idea of being a Hollywood director in the \u201940s, where you\u2019d be doing a cowboy movie and then doing a musical and then doing an adaptation of a book. It was none of the money nonsense,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou were just making stuff.
