\n\tSpanish filmmaker Carlos Saiz took home the top prize Saturday at the Transilvania Intl. Film Festival, as the jury awarded the first-time director the Transilvania Trophy for \u201cLionel,\u201d\u00a0a drama about a young man who embarks on a journey with his father, attempting to repair a relationship marked by years of absence and misunderstanding.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccepting the award on stage at the historic National Theater in Cluj, Saiz said:\u00a0\u201cThis is a film about family and second chances, but above all, it is a film that brings to the forefront people whose stories rarely make it to the screen. Thank you for helping us give them visibility and for honoring them with this award.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe main competition jury was comprised of veteran Irish actor Aidan Gillen (\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d); Romanian filmmaker Noaz Deshe (\u201cXoftex\u201d); Polish distributor, producer and festival founder Roman Gutek; Netherlands Film Fund CEO Sandra den Hamer; and Serbian Romanian filmmaker Ivana\u00a0Mladenovi\u0107 (\u201cSorella di Clausura\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn other awards, the prize for best director went to Greek filmmaker Konstantina Kotzamani for \u201cTitanic Ocean,\u201d\u00a0a fantastical pop odyssey about adolescence, love and the freedom to imagine other worlds that premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. The Special Jury Award went to \u201cOur Father,\u201d by Serbia\u2019s\u00a0Goran Stankovi\u0107, about a drug addict who falls under the harsh guidance of an abusive priest at a remote monastery commune.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe\u00a0best performance award went\u00a0to the entire cast of\u00a0Muriel d\u2019Ansembourg\u2019s \u201cTruly Naked\u201d\u00a0\u2014 Caol\u00e1n O\u2019Gorman, Andrew Howard, Alessa Savage and Safiya Benaddi \u2014 for a film that explores vulnerability, intimacy and the ways people try to reconnect with one another.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the\u00a0Romanian Days\u00a0competition, the award for best feature film went to \u201cY,\u201d\u00a0directed by Maria Popista\u0219u and Alex Baciu, which delves into a dark and largely unexplored chapter in Romania\u2019s recent past. The award for best debut went to\u00a0Cristian Bota\u2019s\u00a0\u201cBack and Forth,\u201d about a young actor who\u2019s forced to confront the past while traveling with his authoritarian father.<\/p>\n

\n\tA special mention from the Romanian Days jury went to Valeriu Andriu\u021b\u0103\u2019s \u201cThe Circle,\u201d while the section\u2019s award for best short film went to \u201cCounty Captain,\u201d by director Dan Panaet.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the\u00a0What\u2019s Up, Doc?\u00a0section, the top prize went to\u00a0\u201cMemory,\u201d by Vladlena Sandu, a deeply personal hybrid documentary in which the filmmaker revisits her childhood experiences during the Chechen War and the traces they have left on the present. The film, which won the People\u2019s Choice Award in the Venice Days sidebar of last year\u2019s Venice Film Festival, continues a torrid streak that includes a jury prize at the Marrakech Film Festival and the best feature award at SXSW London.<\/p>\n

\n\tA special mention from the What\u2019s Up, Doc? jury went to \u201cVariations on a Theme,\u201d from South African directing duo Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar, a docuficton about a rural community burdened by history which won the Tiger Competition at Rotterdam this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tLastly, Hungarian filmmaker G\u00e1bor Holtai won the audience award for the dramatic thriller\u00a0\u201cFeels Like Home,\u201d while\u00a0\u201cWild Delta,\u201d from director\u00a0Dan Dinu, was named the most popular Romanian film in the festival.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn other highlights from Saturday\u2019s closing ceremony, the TIFF.25 Trophy \u2014 a special award handed out in honor of the festival\u2019s 25th anniversary \u2014 was given to Corneliu Porumboiu, one of the leading figures of the Romanian New Wave.<\/p>\n
