\nMat\u012bss Ka\u017ea, producer and co-writer of Gints Zilbalodis\u2019 animated feature Oscar winner \u201cFlow,\u201d has boarded \u201cInsectarium\u201d (\u201cIndsectario\u201d) the upcoming and hugely awaited feature debut of Mexican stop-motion maestro Sofia Carrillo.<\/p>\n

\n\tKa\u017ea joins the project as a producer, as does Daniela Mujica\u2019s Montreal-based Productions Ocho. They join \u201cRoma\u201d producer Pimienta Films in Mexico and Spain\u2019s Inicia Films, behind Berlin Festival winner \u201c20 Species of Bees.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMat\u012bss Ka\u017ea brings \u20ac250,000 ($290,000) from the\u00a0 National Film Centre of Latvia. Mujica, who was recently honored at Cartoon Movie in Bordeaux as \u201cProducer of the Year,\u201d alongside the co-producers of the feature film \u201cAllah n\u2019est pas oblig\u00e9\u201d from Zaven Najjar, has tapped Telefilm Canada support in its latest funding round as well as other soft money. They also bring broader expertise in animation producer and create a four-way international co-production between significant partners, bulwarking the status of the project.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter rocking the animation world with \u201cCerulia,\u201d Mexican stop-motion maestro Sofia Carrillo returns with her first feature, set in a world where insects are extinct \u2013 until an entomologist\u2019s niece accidentally reanimates an Attacus Atlas moth. Written by Monika Revilla (\u201cDance of the 41\u201d), \u201cInsectarium\u201d is to some extent an extension of \u201cCerulia,\u201d Carrillo has told Variety<\/em>, exploring its aesthetic universe and using the same puppets and sometimes same sets.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSof\u00eda Carrillo has a very special voice and animation style, so I was very glad to join \u2018Insectarium\u2019 as a co-producer,\u201d Ka\u017ea told Variety.\u00a0<\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs a producer of the Academy Award-winning \u2018Flow,\u2019 which had a tremendous success in Mexico, it feels especially meaningful to continue this connection through a collaboration with a Mexican production. We have just received confirmation of \u20ac250,000 in funding from the National Film Centre of Latvia, which means that Latvian 3D artists \u2014 several of whom also worked on Flow \u2014 will be able to join the project. This is a very special and unusual co-production for Latvia, as we are generally more used to co-producing within Europe.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is a great honor to co-produce this sensitive and imaginative work while collaborating with such highly regarded teams as Pimienta, Inicia and Trickster\u00a0Pictures,\u201d Mujica added.<\/p>\n

This collaboration will allow many Canadian artisans and creators to contribute to this stop-motion film, which is sure to have a major impact on audiences.
