At the world premiere of \u201cSupergirl\u201d on Monday night, the star explained why she believes Kara Zor-El has become such a meaningful character for LGBTQ+ fans.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=2775\">Disney+ Taps Ron O\u2019Berst, Laura Klimke for Scripted U.K. Roles<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had a few people ask me about her because it\u2019s Pride Month and all that, and I think that she\u2019s a really great representation of what a modern woman can be,\u201d Alcock told <em>Variety <\/em>at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. \u201cShe can be strong, she can be tough, she can be messy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAlcock made headlines earlier in the \u201cSupergirl\u201d press tour after telling a content creator she\u2019s \u201chonored\u201d by queer readings of Kara and that her character \u201cdoesn\u2019t live inside the binary of what we think a woman should be.\u201d This portrayal marks a sharp departure from the more traditional Supergirl depicted in the 1984 film starring Helen Slater, which saw Kara develop a crush on a groundskeeper named Ethan and become entangled in a love triangle involving a magical love potion.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAlcock, with a sheepishly guilty grin, admits she hasn\u2019t watched Slater\u2019s take on \u201cSupergirl.\u201d In her recent <em>Variety<\/em> cover story, the actor revealed that while she spent two months training for the role, she largely avoided superhero movies altogether. She hasn\u2019t seen Marvel\u2019s \u201cBlack Widow\u201d or \u201cCaptain Marvel\u201d \u2014 or even DC\u2019s \u201cWonder Woman.\u201d \u201cWhich is probably not great,\u201d Alcock said. \u201cI should just lie!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhile Alcock says DC Studios co-CEO and \u201cSuperman\u201d director James Gunn \u201cdefinitely\u201d helped expand her superhero movie knowledge, her favorite comic book film doesn\u2019t come from the world DC or Marvel. Instead, she points to Pixar\u2019s \u201cThe Incredibles.\u201d \u201cThat film is so, so good,\u201d she says. \u201cBoth of them, amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBeyond its direct connection to \u201cSuperman,\u201d which stars David Corenswet as Kara\u2019s Kryptonian cousin, \u201cSupergirl\u201d was designed to stand on its own. I wanted to create a world that came from character first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat doesn\u2019t mean Gillespie ignored the comics entirely. While developing the visual language of \u201cSupergirl,\u201d the director says he frequently returned to Tom King\u2019s acclaimed \u201cSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow\u201d (the original title of his movie), using its artwork as a creative touchstone.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPublished in 2022, \u201cWoman of Tomorrow\u201d is widely regarded by fans as the definitive modern take on Kara Zor-El. The series effectively elevated the character beyond being viewed simply as Superman\u2019s female counterpart, reimagining her as a more emotionally complex and world-weary hero still grappling with the trauma of Krypton\u2019s destruction. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tKing, who is consulting on more than a dozen DC Studios projects, says adapting \u201cWoman of Tomorrow\u201d required \u201cletting it go\u201d and trusting the filmmakers to make \u201csomething beautiful\u201d with his \u201cparticularly cool\u201d take on Kara Zor-El.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cSupergirl is a particular kind of cool. An outsider. She\u2019s a person who\u2019s not immediately accepted by the world and carries some baggage,\u201d King says. \u201cI honestly stole it from my daughter, who has that particular coolness.
