\n\t\u00c1lex de la Iglesia, the renowned Spanish film-TV director (\u201cDay of the Beast,\u201d \u201cThe Last Circus,\u201d \u201c30 Coins\u201d) is set to make this animation debut, helming the animated feature \u201cAges of Madness: The Howling of the Jinn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSet up at the Canary Islands\u2019 3Doubles Producciones, behind Goya Award nominees \u201cSuperKlaus\u201d and \u201cNorbert,\u201d and Bizkaia-based Sumendi Uhartea, \u201cAges of Madness\u201d is hailed by 3Doubles as \u201cthe first major adult 3D animation production to fully adapt the complex universe of H.P. Lovecraft for the big screen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe feature film is set to begin production in late 2026. It weaves what is described as several \u201ctragically intertwined stories\u201d linked by one of Lovecraft\u2019s masterpieces, his imagining of a legendary forbidden book, the \u201cNecronomicon,\u201d whose reading sparks madness or ghastly death. Lovecraft consistently refers to the book in his stories, claimed it contains an account of the Old Ones who ruled before humankind and will rule after it. He hardly reproduces the book\u2019s contents, however, making it all the more sinister.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn De la Iglesia\u2019s film, the book will travel through time across four historical and geographical settings as distant as they are grim, 3Doubles Producciones said Wednesday during the Annecy Animation Festival. \u201cFeeding on humanity\u2019s thirst for forbidden knowledge, \u2018Necronomicon\u2019 unleashes madness and the chilling certainty that we are nothing more than dust of the Ancient Ones,\u201d it added, saying the film \u201cexplores the fragility of human sanity in the face of the unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGiven De la Iglesia\u2019s taste for the grotesque and fantasy, one question raised by \u201cAges of Madness\u201d is why he has taken so long to explore animation. He was indeed a comic book artist in his youth, before directing a short, \u201cMirandas asesinas,\u201d which persuaded Pedro and Agust\u00edn Almod\u00f3var to produce his feature debut \u201cMutant Action\u201d in 1993. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBefore making movies, I used to draw monsters, \u201d said De la Iglesia. \u201cI started out creating comic books, and animation has always been there. \u2018Ages of Madness\u2019 gives me the chance to reconnect with my roots alongside an incredibly talented team. I am thrilled because, even after so many years in filmmaking, I can still tackle something new with the excitement of day one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have always been fascinated by the Lovecraftian universe, and being able to bring that cosmic horror to the screen alongside \u00c1lex de la Iglesia is a dream come true,\u201d added 3Doubles CEO Dar\u00edo S\u00e1nchez. \u201cI am convinced that this is a turning point for our sector: adult animation is booming, and this project will put the Spanish industry on the global map.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSumendi Uhartea\u2019s recent animation credits include \u201cHeidi,\u201d \u201cKatamotzaren erreskatea,\u201d \u201cLasai, Zeus!\u201d and \u201cKooKoo Corral,\u201d which was selected for Cartoon Forum 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n
