\n\tThere\u2019s an unwritten golden rule in TV: a character is never truly dead unless you see the body.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s why many \u201cStranger Things\u201d fans still believe Eleven survived the series finale, which ends with Mike Wheeler imagining a future in which she survives the final showdown with Vecna in the Upside Down.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was also inevitable that, during her first major press tour after the end of \u201cStranger Things,\u201d Millie Bobby Brown would be confronted with that very question. At a live recording of \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d at 92NY, Josh Horowitz playfully prodded Brown about Eleven\u2019s fate in what\u2019ll likely be the first round of many similar moments she\u2019ll face for the rest of her career \u2014 or at least until the Duffer brothers allow her to break her pact. <\/p>\n

\n\tBrown told Horowitz that after the finale aired, the co-creators texted her to remind her not to reveal Eleven\u2019s fate to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey were like, \u2018Do not tell anyone. Because we made it a secret kind of pledge,’\u201d Brown said Wednesday evening. \u201cNo one else knows. It\u2019s just us three. And what we do with that information, it\u2019ll be up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBrown watched reactions pour in online alongside her husband, Jake Bongiovi, after the finale dropped on New Year\u2019s Eve. Fans weren\u2019t the only ones left in the dark \u2014 her castmates also had differing opinions about what really happened to Eleven.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJake was like, \u2018Ooh, these are really split.\u2019 And the whole cast thinks I\u2019m dead,\u201d Brown said playfully. \u201cOne, rude. It\u2019s so rude of them. There\u2019s something to it, surely. You guys are projecting! It\u2019s like, \u2018Hey guys, we get it. You want me dead!\u2019 But I was like, \u2018Believe!\u2019 Let\u2019s have some hope in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDavid Harbour, who played Hawkins police chief (and El\u2019s father figure) Jim Hopper in the series, said in his Variety<\/em> cover story interview that her demise was clear from the start. \u201cA lot of people think maybe she\u2019s in Spain or whatever,\u201d he said. \u201cBut right from the very beginning of that series \u2014 we love this little girl, but you really can\u2019t have a little girl in Hawkins, Indiana, with supernatural powers running around. She just cannot exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nSadie Sink was just as certain during an appearance on \u201cThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\u201d: \u201cIs that a hot take or something? Mike\u2019s story is just one last story, and then they say goodbye to childhood. That\u2019s one final tale, and that\u2019s it. It\u2019s just a coping thing. It\u2019s stronger [that way], right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNot everyone<\/em> in the cast agrees, though.\u00a0During a recent fan appearance at PeopleCon, Noah Schnapp asked the audience if anyone believed Eleven was dead. After a few murmurs, he waved his finger and said, \u201cNo, she\u2019s alive,\u201d flashing a thumbs-up and a smile to the crowd.<\/p>\n

\n\tHorowitz did the same during the live podcast recording with Brown, and about 80 to 90 percent of the audience said they believed Eleven was still alive. \u201cWe have a hopeful audience,\u201d Brown gushed. \u201cI love that!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen pressed on the question one more time, Brown concluded: \u201cAll people say now is, \u2018Do you believe?\u2019 And of course I believe. I have to believe, honestly \u2014 otherwise January will come around again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBrown was referring to the post-\u201cStranger Things\u201d\u00a0slump she fell into after the series ended. \u201cI went into a little bit of a slight, slight depression,\u201d she revealed. \u201cIt was very hard for me. I would not have expected that coming off of the show. I\u2019m a very happy-go-lucky person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOver that month, Brown said she spent January reconnecting with her \u201cStranger Things\u201d co-stars to \u201cmend\u201d any unresolved tensions and reaffirm that their personal relationships would continue even after the series ended.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey probably thought I was crazy,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI was like, \u2018We\u2019re still friends, right? Like, you\u2019re not gonna stop talking to me anymore?\u2019 I was like, \u2018I\u2019m sorry if I ever upset you,\u2019 and was just trying to mend anything. \u2018It\u2019s been 10 years, and I really want to be friends. You\u2019re my sibling.\u2019 And then I was on the beach, it was beautiful, and I just sat there crying. It was a very hard time for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd no one will ever understand it,\u201d she continued. \u201cI started the show when I was 10, and this character was me, and these people were in my life more than my own family. I saw these people more than going home and eating dinner with my family. Saying goodbye to that after 10 years was a very, very emotional thing, and I\u2019m going to miss Eleven more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Duffer brothers explained in their finale postmortem interview with Variety<\/em>\u2019s Kate Aurthur that, despite the intentionally vague circumstances, there was never a version of the script \u201cwhere it was Eleven down in that basement\u201d playing one last \u201cDungeons & Dragons\u201d campaign with her friends. \u201cIt was finding a way to come up with an ending where it was not that simple,\u201d Ross Duffer said, \u201cbut also bittersweet, and that there was hope there.<\/p>\n

While the co-creators refused to elaborate further on El\u2019s fate, they did confirm that \u201cEleven does not communicate with Mike in any way\u201d \u2014 and that, even if she were alive, a reunion would be unlikely.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny contact would risk bringing her back out in the open and starting the cycle again,\u201d Ross continued. \u201cSo, in the story that Mike\u2019s telling, I don\u2019t think he sees a version where they reconnect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for the future of\u00a0\u201cStranger Things,\u201d Brown teased that plans for a future project with Harbour were \u201cconcrete.\u201d Asked for more details, she offered a riddle: \u201cFather-daughter is where we live, but Netflix will always be our home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLater in the conversation, Brown said she is \u201cslowly developing things with Netflix, my home studio,\u201d including the rom-com\u00a0\u201cJust Picture It\u201d with Gabriel LaBelle. She also hinted that the TV series\u00a0\u201cPrism\u201d\u00a0may be on hold as she figures out her \u201ctime and [her] schedule,\u201d before circling back to the project with Harbour.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe David Harbour project is sooner than expected,\u201d she said with a smile. \u201cAnd it\u2019s David\u2019s idea, so kudos to him.\u201d<\/p>\n
