\nDisney announced Friday a new short at Annecy: \u201cLilo & Scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor the first time in five years, we have a new theatrical short,\u201d said director Fawn Veerasunthorn, adding: \u201cWe are in this room because every single one of us loves animation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt takes place shortly after the first film, and everyone\u2019s favorite troublemaker Stitch is doing fine with his new family. But then Lilo brings home a new family member: a cat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tChris Sanders, responsible for the original voice of Stitch, will voice him again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat happens next is a \u201cwild, chaotic chase around the island. This is the kind of mayhem we love with this character,\u201d added Walt Disney Animation Studios\u2019 Malcon Pierce after showing the audience its first two minutes.\u00a0It will be released in the fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDisney\u2019s new feature \u201cHexed\u201d is also on its way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s our 65th<\/sup>\u00a0animated film,\u201d noted \u201cHexed\u201d director Jason Hand.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe love exploring magic and those who can make impossible possible,\u201d added Veerasunthorn, also a director on \u201cHexed.\u201d The team presented first work-in-progress footage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFocusing on Billie, a girl who discovers magical abilities, it\u2019s voiced by Hailee Steinfeld \u2013 \u201cShe\u2019s so funny and full of heart,\u201d said Hand \u2013 Rashida Jones, Tracey Ullman, Alan Tudyk and Stephen Fry.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe style of the film \u201callows for a lot of physical humor,\u201d said Veerasunthorn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBillie\u2019s powers are wonderful, but they invite danger. Her mother gives her a special bracelet [when she\u2019s a child] \u2013 it limits her magic, ensuring she will never open another portal and endanger herself again,\u201d noted Hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tYears later, Billie keeps on rebelling \u2013 against everything. But she still doesn\u2019t remove her bracelet. Until an accident happens, and she finds out who she really is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis creates a bit of a situation. But its draw is undeniable,\u201d laughed Veerasunthorn. <\/p>\n

\n\tBut Billie doesn\u2019t know anything about magic, which is a bit of a problem in Hexe, a realm of actual witches where she ends up. Luckily, she soon meets new friends: like Beef Roger Crummchuk.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s a bit of a drinker, but in a Disney magical way. She\u2019s able to convince him to help her and to rescue her mum,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\n\tEventually, Billie will be able to unlock her family\u2019s secret. <\/p>\n

\n\tTalking to\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0after the presentation, Veerasunthorn noted: \u201cIt became one of our True North goals as I joined this project. Have you ever been curious about your mom? And parents as people who live their life, just like us? As a kid, you don\u2019t really see them that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHand noted: \u201cIt\u2019s the core of the movie: it\u2019s a mother-daughter love story.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cObviously, that means they don\u2019t always start out where it feels like they\u2019re in love. I think we all have the experience with our parents where we grow up and we see them first as these superheroes. And then you realize they\u2019re people and they\u2019re fallible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey wanted Billie to look like a \u201crebellious spirit,\u201d said Hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt really stems from this idea of feeling like she\u2019s limited and she doesn\u2019t quite know what to do with that, so it comes out in different ways,\u201d he said, with Veerasunthorn recalling: \u201cI went to school with uniforms when I was younger. Even to wear different shoes felt like I won the day by sneaking this one aspect in. It helps us honing in on the feeling of witchiness of this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHand said: \u201cShe\u2019s trying to figure out who she is, too. And that\u2019s such a ripe age for a teenager to go through. Also, she\u2019s not like our regular Disney characters. It\u2019s a fascinating thing because we do a lot of very noble characters at our studio. I love that we\u2019re not doing that this time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf she breaks something, she doesn\u2019t apologize. She would just sweep it under the rug. She\u2019s the kind of character that pushes against limits. But sometimes, there\u2019s a danger that comes with that,\u201d added Veerasunthorn.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey wanted to create a universe with a new set of rules, she noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBillie might think: \u2018Oh, if I\u2019m a witch, I would do this.\u2019 And people go: \u2018What are you talking about? We don\u2019t do that here.\u2019 We\u2019re flipping the expectations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHand said: \u201cThere\u2019s this element of persecution [associated with witches] and that\u2019s what Billie feels like she\u2019s going through. It really speaks to who she is as a character and who she is as a person. She feels very connected to that world, and she has obviously a lot to learn about it. We get to learn it too, through her eyes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOr through the eyes of her new companions, like Beef Roger Crummchuk.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCats are such a huge thing with witches, so we loved playing with that idea, but there\u2019s so much more to him. There\u2019s a lot of fun to be had, but Beef\u2019s sense of humor is definitely on the edge,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

\n\tContinuing Disney\u2019s legacy of telling magical stories was a bit daunting at first.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen we look into what magic means emotionally to people throughout time, it\u2019s this yearning for an ability to do something about your situation that you might not feel like you have control over. This conversation was all really interesting to us,\u201d said Veerasunthorn, with Hand noting: \u201cIt took us a long time to get to that point where it feels right. But now that we have it, it\u2019s so cool. It\u2019s really exciting when Billie\u2019s able to finally figure out how to actually control it. It\u2019s really satisfying.\u201d<\/p>\n
