The biggest risk of all is to play it safe,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cThat\u2019s what, consistently in mainstream movies, doesn\u2019t work. The audience is looking for something new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNolan then launched into a story about pitching his 2000 breakout \u201cMemento\u201d to his wife and producer Emma Thomas. Nolan recalled that she \u201cresponded well with the script,\u201d but \u201cfelt it was taking a lot of risk\u201d to structure the film backward.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI was able to say to her: \u2018No, I can do this.\u2019 There are a lot of filmmakers who can do it in a more straightforward way. He added that his upcoming film \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d also takes many risks, and that he hopes it too will be well received.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThen we tried to sell it to people who didn\u2019t get it, so she was completely right,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cBut eventually it got to an audience and the audience appreciated that. The risk is the intermediaries \u2014 the financiers, the studio.
