\nSam Worthington has his wife to thank for his role in one of Netflix\u2019s most successful series, \u201cI Will Find You.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show, the latest adaptation from novelist Harlan Coben, sees Worthington as David Burroughs, a man convicted and sent to prison for brutally beating his young son Matthew to death. After spending five years behind bars, David\u2019s sister-in-law Rachel \u2013 a Boston Globe reporter played by Britt Lower \u2013 helps him escape to prove that he\u2019s not only innocent, but that his son is still alive. Rounding out the cast are Milo Ventimiglia as Rachel\u2019s wildly wealthy ex-boyfriend Hayden and Madeline Stowe as his seemingly sinister mother. Logan Browning and Chi McBride play FBI agents on the hunt for David.\n\n\t\n\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy wife\u2019s a Harlan fan, and she was the one who said, \u2018You got to take that call,\u2019\u201d Worthington recalls about first being approached by producers for the project. \u201cI said, \u2018Why?\u2019 And she goes, \u2018Because you don\u2019t do stuff that I like to watch, and I\u2019d like to watch this.\u2019 So that\u2019s where it started, to be honest. It was her instinct.\u201d\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAs with any Coben series, there are more twists and turns than one can count. I was hooked immediately and binged all eight episodes over one weekend.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe got early copies of it,\u201d Worthington said. \u201cMy wife and my 11-year-old son binged exactly like you did. They didn\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix announced that \u201cI Will Find You\u201d was viewed 24 million times in its first four days, making it the streamer\u2019s biggest series debut of 2026. \u201cHarlan said to me, \u2018If you work that out, say there\u2019s three people in a household, that\u2019s like 60 million people,\u2019\u201d Worthington says. \u201cI thought that was pretty incredible.\u201d\n\n\t\n<\/p>

\n\tDavid Burroughs is a man of few words. His mission is to find his son, and he\u2019ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. In other words, David becomes an action hero of sorts. However, Worthington sees things a little differently. He told Coben and producers to cut many of his lines. \u201cGive the exposition to others, and allow David to be the emotion, to feel the story through David,\u201d Worthington says. \u201cIn a weird way, it\u2019s less heroic than I think is in the book than they \u2013 the producers and Harlan \u2014 first thought because I always wanted Britt\u2019s character, Rachel, to be the hero, and allow David to be the damsel in distress. I think they found that a very odd approach because they were after a more heroic leading kind of character, but I just thought that was a different way into this genre, and it allowed me to not get overtaken by the pulp, and the dramatic turns that it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWorthington was willing to do most of his own stunt work, but he wasn\u2019t allowed because of his \u201cAvatar\u201d commitments. \u201cThere was a lot I couldn\u2019t do because of my Disney \u2018Avatar\u2019 contract,\u201d he says. \u201cThey said, \u2018You\u2019re not allowed to do this.\u2019 I said, \u2018Why not? I\u2019m keen. I\u2019m ready. I can do this.\u2019 They were like, \u2018James Cameron won\u2019t let you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs \u201cI Will Find You\u201d unfolds, David and Rachel become closer. At some points, there are hints of a romance brewing. The finale includes a shot of the two holding hands. \u201cShe\u2019s his sister-in-law, so I always found that very odd,\u201d Worthington says of viewers shipping the duo. \u201cI think we probably pushed back on any big romantic kiss because of that reasoning. I think it would have become a telenovela rather than a melodrama. It might have been too much. But in the end, I like that there is this simple gesture because the story is about hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHayden is eventually revealed as Matthew\u2019s kidnapper. He\u2019s so desperate to keep Matthew as his son that he\u2019s even willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, including a detective whom he violently murders with a rock and his mother, who he fatally shoots. \u201cThe series does start off quite naturalistic, and then it becomes operatic,\u201d Worthington says. \u201cBy the time you get to Hayden killing his mom and killing a detective from another country, we know we\u2019re in another genre.\u201d\n\n\t\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for a second season, Worthington jokes it could include Matthew needing a lot of therapy, not only because of the kidnapping trauma, but also because he has to transition from a very pampered, monied life to working-class Boston. Worthington laughs, \u201cYou took that kid from this rich big house \u2014 is the kid gonna have any resentment towards David?\u201d<\/p>
