\n2027 Academy Awards Predictions Commentary All Categories (Updated: June 28, 2026):<\/strong> We\u2019ve officially crossed into the second half of 2026.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe box office is roaring back, audiences are returning to theaters, and the fall festivals are beginning to stir early speculation about what could premiere at each, which will launch dozens of hopeful Oscar campaigns.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe first half of the year delivered viable Oscar hopefuls across several races, including Amazon MGM Studios\u2019 \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d Lionsgate\u2019s \u201cMichael,\u201d A24\u2019s \u201cThe Invite\u201d and Pixar\u2019s \u201cToy Story 5.\u201d Now we begin to look ahead, sifting through the rumor mill to separate what we\u2019re hearing is \u201cgreat\u201d from what remains \u201cunknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne film that isn\u2019t expected to surface at any festival is Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune: Part Three,\u201d the third and final installment of the Warner Bros. saga. With a December release locked in, going head-to-head with \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d on the same date, there\u2019s no reason to rush it out, especially with early word as strong as it is. Is this a \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King\u201d situation, where the Academy waits until the final chapter to fully embrace a franchise? One thing is certain: We can\u2019t fathom an outcome in which Villeneuve goes un-nominated for best director after everything he\u2019s built with these films.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s massive <\/em>early buzz around Martin McDonagh\u2019s anticipated \u201cWild Horse Nine\u201d and the performances of John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Mariana di Girolamo. After going home empty-handed with \u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin,\u201d Searchlight Pictures will be steering the ship to make sure history doesn\u2019t repeat itself.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Cannes Film Festival surfaced a few contenders worth tracking, most notably Palme d\u2019Or winner \u201cFjord\u201d from Cristian Mungiu and the tied best director winners, \u201cFatherland\u201d from Pawel Pawlikowski and \u201cLa Bola Negra\u201d from the duo of Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. Neon, Mubi and Netflix will ensure they capitalize on that momentum with more stops on the festival circuit.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s been plenty of positive early word about Jesse Eisenberg\u2019s next directorial feature, \u201cThe Debut,\u201d described by one industry insider as \u201chis best film yet\u201d and, more notably, \u201cJulianne Moore\u2019s best performance of her career.\u201d That\u2019s high praise.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd there\u2019s plenty we still don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\n\tChristopher Nolan is following his best picture winner, \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d by turning to Homer, with \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d opening in a few weeks. Aaron Sorkin\u2019s \u201cThe Social Reckoning\u201d impressed many with its trailer, and we\u2019re told to keep a close eye on Jeremy Strong and, from what I\u2019m also hearing, Bill Burr. A career retrospective trailer teased Tom Cruise\u2019s turn in Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s \u201cDigger,\u201d and that best actor campaign will be front and center all season.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis looks to be a stellar year for animation. With \u201cHoppers\u201d and \u201cToy Story 5\u201d already delivering, insiders say there\u2019s something special about Brad Bird\u2019s \u201cRay Gunn\u201d at Netflix and Travis Knight\u2019s \u201cWildwood\u201d at Laika.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe prediction list below is far <\/em>from complete, and it will change dozens of times before the season ends. The first ranked charts for the best picture category are now live. They won\u2019t be updated again until after the Venice and Telluride film festivals wrap, following Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n

\n\tUntil then, let\u2019s all sit with the feeling many of us have had for a while now: The movies are back, baby.<\/p>\n
