\nLauryn Hill was honored with the Living Legend Icon Award as well as a very robust all-star performance featuring Doechii, Nas, Doja Cat, SZA, Common and Queen Latifah, among many others, at the BET Awards 2026.<\/p>\n

\n\tIce Cube introduced the megawatt tribute by giving Hill her flowers. \u201cOne of the greatest voices in Black music history,\u201d he said, \u201cShe achieved the depths of her complexity that defined her artistry.\u201d Thus began an epic tribute to Hill, first with a significantly personal tribute to hill from the War & Treaty. They sang \u201cHis Eye Is on the Sparrow,\u201d which the group\u2019s Tanya Trotter duetted on with Hill in the film \u201cSister Act 2: Back in the Habit,\u201d back when she went by Tanya Blount. She sang it directly to Hill, who was taken aback by the powerful rendition.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe hits kept coming. SZA and Doechii took the stage along with a big band for Fugees\u2019 \u201cReady or Not,\u201d passing it off to Tierra Whack and Tems for \u201cFu-Gee-La\u201d followed by her daughter Selah to sing the title track off \u201cThe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.\u201d Doja Cat came next with \u201cSuperstar\u201d and brought out Nas, who revisited their hit \u201cIf I Ruled the World (Imagine That)\u201d with Doja on the chorus.<\/p>\n

\n\tYG Marley sang his late father Bob Marley\u2019s verse on the Hill duet \u201cTurn Your Lights Down Low\u201d while Lizzo threw it back to the fashion Hill wore in the video for \u201cDoo Wop (That Thing),\u201d singing the classic tune with Rapsody. Zion Marley emerged to the tune of Hill\u2019s tribute to him, \u201cTo Zion,\u201d segueing into his song \u201cMarching.\u201d Alexia Jayy then sang \u201cKilling Me Softly\u201d and handed it over to Queen Latifah and Common to wrap up the tribute with \u201cLost Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter a commercial break, Hill took the stage to perform \u201cEx-Factor,\u201d telling the audience she wasn\u2019t supposed to perform but heard that someone had bowed out of the tribute. Ice Cube then returned to the stage to present her with her well-deserved award.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people,\u201d said Hill during her acceptance speech. \u201cSo we put ourselves sometimes as artists, we put ourselves in situations to say things that aren\u2019t always comfortable, but we understand that people will understand later. I fight for y\u2019all. Everybody might not know about it, but I fight for y\u2019all. And fight for y\u2019all, it\u2019s fighting for me.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re not going to let institutions, we\u2019re not going to let traps stop us from arriving at that destination because that\u2019s our inheritance,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe may not always agree all the time, but I\u2019m rooting for you and I\u2019m grateful that you root for me sometimes too. All of our differences, all of our uniqueness, that\u2019s the beauty, ya\u2019ll. We don\u2019t have to sound the same, we don\u2019t have to be the same, we don\u2019t have to look the same. That\u2019s the beauty. I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHill then closed the BET Awards with a rendition of \u201cEverything Is Everything.\u201d Other musicians to receive special awards at the BET Awards 2026 included Teyana Taylor, who was presented with the Icon of the Year award by Janet Jackson, and music executive Sylvia Rhone, who was honored with the Ultimate Icon Award as presented by Kelly Rowland.<\/p>\n
