{"id":332,"date":"2026-05-20T17:08:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T17:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=332"},"modified":"2026-05-20T17:08:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T17:08:02","slug":"heat-of-the-moment-how-al-gore-and-an-inconvenient-truth-changed-the-way-we-think-about-climate-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=332","title":{"rendered":"Heat of the Moment: How Al Gore and \u2018An Inconvenient Truth\u2019 Changed the Way We Think About Climate Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\nDavis Guggenheim had given notice and was on the way out of his job as a Participant Media creative executive in 2005 when producers Lawrence Bender and Laurie David came to him with an idea.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>At the time, former Vice President Al Gore was touring the country giving slideshow presentations to any group that would listen about the coming threat of climate change, or \u201cglobal warming,\u201d as it was widely known 20 years ago. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=330\">\u2018Talladega Nights\u2019 Races Back to Theaters for 20th Anniversary<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tBender and David thought Gore\u2019s folksy delivery of complicated scientific and climatological information would lend itself to a documentary that might add urgency to environmental policy debates. The pair also thought Guggenheim had the right sensibility to translate Gore\u2019s passion to the screen. Participant Media chief Jeff Skoll also took in one of Gore\u2019s presentations and had one note for producers: \u201cDo it fast.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The result would be \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth,\u201d the 2006 Participant Media\/Paramount Classics release that shocked the industry following its domestic theaterical release on May 24, 2006, as it became a runaway hit at the box office by documentary standards. More important, the film had enormous cultural impact.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThousands of people have come up to me and said, \u2018I put solar panels on my house.\u2019 \u2018I bought a Prius.\u2019 There were certain countries that made it required viewing,\u201d Guggenheim says in an interview at his Concordia Studio in a former surfboard factory in the Venice area of Los Angeles.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cInconvenient Truth\u201d opened in limited release in 2006 and went on to gross about $50 million worldwide. Despite its less than flashy presentation \u2014 it\u2019s largely a 95-minute lecture from Gore, with some PowerPoint-style graphics and a bit of behind-the-scenes footage \u2014 the film had an impact in the moment that was head-spinning.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cYou had companies changing their policies, politicians making [climate issues] a priority. It was incredible,\u201d Guggenheim says. \u201cIt\u2019ll never happen that way again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tU.S. environmental policy has been a roller coaster ride in recent years. The Trump administration has been a man-made disaster for environmental policy and for federal support of research and climate-related issues. Guggenheim takes solace in the rise of a green tech and green energy industry that is driving market solutions \u2013 or at least mitigations \u2013 to urgent concerns.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThere\u2019s no way to avoid this. There\u2019s going to be another Sandy, there\u2019s going to be another Katrina,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be another climate change moment, and each time, we get a little bit more focused and more gets done.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Now, he continues, there are \u201ctrue market forces at play,\u201d two decades later.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWhen we made the movie 20 years ago, we were struggling at the end to find solutions we could offer the audience,\u201d he says. \u201cWe had a shot of a Prius and a shot of a windmill. And now what\u2019s hopeful is that there are market forces, true market forces. So that\u2019s very heartening, despite the political cycle.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Twenty years ago, Guggenheim responded to Skoll\u2019s call to get \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d out into the world. It was five and a half months from the start of production to the film\u2019s Sundance in January 2006.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cI like working fast. In the same breath, he emphasizes (not for the first time) that it all started with Gore\u2019s vision.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cI feel like Al Gore changed the world, and our movie helped what he was doing,\u201d Guggenheim says. \u201cThe movie captured it and told his story in a unique way.
