\n\tMicrosoft Corp.\u2019s Xbox division has backed out of a deal with IO Interactive to fund and publish a new game, as the company re-evaluates investment decisions.<\/p>\n

\n\tIO Interactive, the maker of \u201cHitman\u201d and popular new release \u201c007 First Light,\u201d plans to continue to develop the game, which has the code name \u201cProject Fantasy.\u201d However, the Copenhagen-based video game developer will be forced to find other funding or publish the game itself.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0a statement to Bloomberg News, an Xbox representative told the outlet the company is \u201ctaking a fresh look at where we invest so we\u2019re focusing on our highest priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re not reducing our overall investment in games,\u201d the rep added. \u201cWe expect to invest about the same in content as we did last year. What\u2019s changing is where we\u2019re investing and the kinds of projects we\u2019re backing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe cancellation of the deal follows rumors that Xbox is preparing for\u00a0significant job cuts, with new\u00a0CEO\u00a0Asha Sharma outlining an upcoming \u201creset\u201d\u00a0in a memo to staff earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tProlific video game producer Hideo Kojima\u2019s much anticipated-game \u201cOD\u201d is set to survive Microsoft and Xbox\u2019s big\u00a0business \u201creset,\u201d according to a source familiar with Microsoft\u2019s plans, who says the upcoming horror game will remain in the works at Kojima Productions and with Xbox publishing, even as Microsoft reassesses its video game investments.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Tuesday, IO Interactive released a statement via X regarding Xbox\u2019s decision to pull out of \u201cProject Fantasy.\u201d The publisher clarified that it has \u201cto adapt to this new reality and its short-term consequences, including staffing decisions, which is what is happening as we write this update.\u201d IO Interactive added that it is \u201cfully committed to supporting those affected through this challenging transition,\u201d concluding with, \u201c\u2018Project Fantasy\u2019 is a game, a world, and an IP that we absolutely love and remain 100% committed to, now and in the future. This wonderful universe will see the light of day.\u201d<\/p>\n
