\nMichelle Dockery will return to the stage for the first time in seven years to lead the world premiere of Ava Pickett\u2019s new play \u201cBloodsport: After Helen of Troy\u201d at Stratford East. <\/p>\n

\n\tDockery, known for playing Lady Mary Crawley in \u201cDownton Abbey,\u201d will star as Helen opposite Laura Aikman as Cee, marking Aikman\u2019s stage debut.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBloodsport: After Helen of Troy\u201d will run at Stratford East from Sept. 3 to Oct. 10. The staging is the first Lisa Spirling has directed since taking over as Stratford East\u2019s artistic director and co-CEO.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe play centers on Helen\u2019s homecoming following a war waged over her, unfolding on the first uneasy night of peace. Her husband is jubilant at her return, but her friend Cee reacts very differently, and old grievances surface as the true price of Helen\u2019s departure comes into focus.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAva is such an extraordinary voice in storytelling right now and I\u2019m delighted to be part of this bold reimagining of Helen\u2019s return from Troy,\u201d Dockery said. \u201cStratford East\u2019s history of bringing vital and ambitious stories to life makes it the perfect home for this production.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFrom the moment I read Ava\u2019s brilliant script I was desperate to play Cee,\u201d Aikman added. \u201cI think we can deliver something really gripping and I can\u2019t wait to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo be given the opportunity to reimagine characters we feel we know is such a privilege and I can\u2019t wait to share this story with audiences,\u201d Pickett said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe creative team includes set and costume designer Polly Sullivan, lighting designer Zeynep Kepekli, sound designer and composer Nicola T. Chang, movement director Klo\u00e9 Dean, casting director Juliet Horsley CDG and dramaturg Ed Madden. Further casting has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n

\n\tDockery is best known for her Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated turn as Lady Mary Crawley across six seasons of \u201cDownton Abbey\u201d and its subsequent film trilogy, most recently \u201cDownton Abbey: The Grand Finale.\u201d She will next play former British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman in \u201cThe Queen of Fashion.\u201d Her stage credits include \u201cNetwork\u201d at the National Theatre, for which the production earned an Olivier nomination, as well as \u201cBurnt by the Sun,\u201d \u201cPygmalion\u201d and \u201cDying for It.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAikman recently appeared in ITV\u2019s \u201cThe Lady\u201d and Disney+\u2019s \u201cSuspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes,\u201d and will next appear in a new series of \u201cLine of Duty\u201d for the BBC. She reprised her role as Sonia in 2024\u2019s \u201cGavin and Stacey: The Finale,\u201d which drew nearly 20 million U.K. viewers.<\/p>\n

\n\tPickett\u2019s debut play, \u201c1536,\u201d is currently running in the West End after transferring from the Almeida Theatre. It was nominated for the 2026 Olivier Award for best new play and won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Pickett is adapting \u201c1536\u201d for television at the BBC and is co-writing a Joan of Arc feature for Warner Bros. with Baz Luhrmann.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpirling previously served as chief executive and artistic director of Theatre503 from 2016 to 2025. Her other directing credits include \u201cVardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial\u201d in the West End, which earned an Olivier nomination.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe production is supported by Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Eilene Davidson Productions and Cockayne Grants for the Arts.<\/p>\n
