\n\tLegendary American actor Dustin Hoffman recalled his decades-spanning career while accepting the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at the opening ceremony of the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Visibly emotional after watching a long showreel trailing some of his greatest roles in films like \u201cTootsie,\u201d \u201cRain Man\u201d and \u201cKramer vs Kramer,\u201d the actor said he feels \u201cvery lucky\u201d to have \u201chis life\u2019s work on a screen staring back at you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHoffman, who will also present a special screening of Mike Nichols\u2019s 1967 drama \u201cThe Graduate\u201d at the festival, started his passionate speech by saying he felt \u201chonored and humbled\u201d by the award. The actor recalled working with the late Robert Redford in Alan J. Pakula\u2019s lauded investigative thriller \u201cAll the President\u2019s Men,\u201d stating Redford told him back then: \u201cYou never think about a body of work while you\u2019re making movies, because you\u2019re busy building the body. And that\u2019s true. The pleasure of doing what we do is being engrossed in the work itself and losing track of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI first fell in love with acting because it was the first time I felt lost in time,\u201d he continued. \u201cI knew instinctively that this was how I wanted to live. I wanted to be lost in time. I wanted to be absorbed in time. Why? Because it made me feel alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor mentioned his upcoming 89th birthday in early August, telling the audience, \u201cif you\u2019re very lucky, one day you\u2019ll get to be an old man like me [\u2026] and there it is, your life\u2019s work on screen staring back at you. It makes me very emotional, very nostalgic and most of all very grateful to have had the opportunity to do what I love decade after decade with so many brilliant people who were doing what they loved, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cHook\u201d star also praised the Czech festival for \u201cserving this love of filmmaking.\u201d \u201cFestivals like this one help support and inspire all actors and filmmakers who pursue this work with passion and love, and that\u2019s what makes it truly meaningful. Thanks for the honor of this award, but most importantly, thank you for joining me in caring for this art form.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHoffman will soon release his memoir, \u201cLook at Me,\u201d which will be published on Nov. 10 through Simon & Schuster\u2019s Simon Six imprint. The memoir will provide insight into the actor\u2019s life, family background, achievements, and what it means to pursue one\u2019s own creativity.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe opening ceremony also saw actor-turned-director Maggie Gyllenhaal be awarded the festival\u2019s President\u2019s Award. The well-humored star began her speech by emphasizing how \u201cmoved\u201d she felt by the ceremony\u2019s extended opening musical number, which saw renditions of major film hits from the last six decades such as C\u00e9line Dion\u2019s \u201cMy Heart Will Go On\u201d from \u201cTitanic\u201d and Keala Settle\u2019s \u201cThis Is Me\u201d from \u201cThe Greatest Showman\u201d sang live against a backdrop of festival memories.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tReferencing her latest directorial effort, \u201cThe Bride,\u201d Gyllenhaal said: \u201cIf you have seen [my new film], you\u2019ll know that I love dancing and singing and I even teared up a little bit watching everyone be so open. It moved me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is not the first award given by the festival to Gyllenhaal. In 2006, she won best actress for Laurie Collyer\u2019s \u201cSherrybaby,\u201d but couldn\u2019t make it to the spa town for the ceremony. The actor did, however, visit the town a few years prior, as a 19-year-old exchange student from Columbia University taking a semester abroad in Prague.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was thinking about this lovely invitation to come and accept this award and I think that being here that semester was one of the first inklings I had of myself as a director,\u201d she recalled, adding that, despite her extensive career as an actor, she has only directed two films: \u201cThe Bride\u201d and \u201cThe Lost Daughter.\u201d \u201cIt took me a while to realize that was the better job for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile in Prague as a student, Gyllenhaal took a Czech Culture Studies class. In her first week, she was shown Milo\u0161 Forman\u2019s \u201cThe Firemen\u2019s Ball.\u201d Despite liking the film, it almost wasn\u2019t enough to entice her to return for week two. But she did, and that\u2019s when she first watched Forman\u2019s \u201cLoves of a Blonde.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSomething happened to me,\u201d she noted of that fateful screening. \u201cI loved that movie. It\u2019s like something cracked in me. I went: I like that. Maybe everyone likes \u2018The Firemen\u2019s Ball\u2019 better, but I like this better. Me. This is my taste. And then I kind of started to go, ok, yes, I like Quentin Tarantino, like everybody else does, and I also like Jane Campion and I also like \u2018Fiddler on the Roof\u2019 and, it turns out, I also like obscure Milo\u0161 Forman movies. Or one of them, in particular. That voice of going, \u2018this is me, this is what I like,\u2019 is part of what pushed me to be a director, to express my view of the world, however strange and challenging and however different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe opening ceremony was followed by a screening of the festival\u2019s opening night film, Juan Cabral and Santiago Franco\u2019s \u201cThe Match.\u201d The 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival runs July 3-11.<\/p>\n
