The selected directors and their films will be introduced on-site to Karlovy Vary audiences on July 6 and 7. His atmospheric MA thesis film, \u201cClass Photo,\u201d competed in this year\u2019s Cannes Critics\u2019 Week. Alongside his creative work, he is actively involved in film education.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>David Champaigne<br \/><\/strong>\u201cSelf-Sown\u201d<br \/>University of Ljubljana, Academy of Theater, Radio, Film and Television<br \/>Slovenia<br \/>Ljubljana-born helmer-writer Champaigne is currently developing a feature-length version of his \u201cSelf-Sown\u201d screenplay at the Scenarnica Workshop, which is organized and financed by the Directors Guild of Slovenia and the Slovenian Film Center.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>J\u00falia Coldwell Serra<br \/><\/strong>\u201cNobody Barks\u201d<br \/>Catalonia Film and Audiovisual School, ESCAC<br \/>Spain<br \/>The Spanish helmer-writer shows a flair for dramedy and quirky tone in festival favorite \u201cNobody Barks,\u201d which nabbed kudos in Busan, Riga and Brussels. She is currently developing her first short outside of film school, titled \u201cMunicipal Services,\u201d and plans to shoot at the end of this year. Her project was selected for this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival\u2019s Short Film Corner Focus Script Lab.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Helmi Donner<br \/><\/strong>\u201cThe Lightning Rod\u201d<br \/>ELO Film School Finland, Aalto University<br \/>Finland<br \/>Helmer-writer Donner\u2019s interest in subjects that simultaneously encompass cruelty and tenderness is apparent in both \u201cThe Lightning Rod\u201d and her in-development feature debut with the working title \u201cThe Needs of Others.\u201d It tells the story of friendship between a rescuer and a victim. The project is participating in the Kehitt\u00e4m\u00f6 \u2013 Talent Development Lab, which provides a grant as well as personal mentoring from top international professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Ollie Launspach<br \/><\/strong>\u201cKiss Kiss Bang Bang\u201d<br \/>Netherlands Film Academy<br \/>Netherlands<br \/>Perhaps the most intensely personal of the many personal films in this year\u2019s selection, Launspach\u2019s graduation film uses home videos, photographs, diary entries, audio recordings and interviews to explore the impact of his gender transition on his girlfriend. The intimate and playful short has played widely on the festival circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3538\">\u0160imon Hol\u00fd Turns Drag, Family and Small-Town Life Into a Tender Political Statement in \u2018Chica Checa\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Marie Luk\u00e1\u010dov\u00e1<br \/><\/strong>\u201cOrla\u201d<br \/>UMPRUM<br \/>Czech Republic<br \/>A painter, animator, director, rapper and co-founder of the feminist group Fourth Wave, which opened a debate on the topic of sexism at Czech universities, Luk\u00e1\u010dov\u00e1 is also a lecturer at the Center for Audiovisual Studies at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). Her eco-feminist fairytale \u201cOrla\u201d was developed with the KVIFF Talents scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Teilo Quillard<br \/><\/strong>\u201cZampano\u201d<br \/>La F\u00e9mis<br \/>France<br \/>Son of a French trapeze artist and an English aerialist, helmer-writer Quillard grew up in a traditional circus world. His next two projects, however, take place amidst a more contemporary circus environment. \u201cI Love You, Fuck Off\u201d is about two punk clowns in chaotic love and explores co-dependence in a couple. \u201cAller L\u00e0-Bas (Ali Baba)\u201d follows a young man who runs away from home to become a trapeze artist.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Jozo Schmuch<br \/><\/strong>\u201cShallow Ground\u201d<br \/>Academy of Dramatic Arts, Zagreb<br \/>Croatia<br \/>The impressive and poignant \u201cShallow Ground\u201d shows war as part of a personal and collective history. Schmuch is currently developing another short called \u201cThe Second Law of Thermodynamics,\u201d about two architects hiding their relationship from their office. He\u2019s also seeking a producer for a feature project about a middle-aged radio-documentary director traveling through rural Croatia in search of unexplained stories after the untimely death of her teenaged son.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Hae-Sup Sin<br \/><\/strong>\u201cHalf-Moon\u201d<br \/>Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK<br \/>Switzerland<br \/>Viewers can see Sin in a central acting role in his master\u2019s degree graduation film \u201cHalf-Moon.\u201d The busy Zurich-based Swiss-Korean helmer-writer\u2019s passion is cross-cultural stories set in diasporic communities. He\u2019s currently developing a feature with the working title \u201cSome Korean Summer.\u201d It\u2019s a romance set in the Korean countryside, about a Swiss woman and Korean man who grow by learning from each other\u2019s cultures. He also has another feature in development with the working title \u201cThe Persimmon Tree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Andr\u00e9 Vaara<br \/><\/strong>\u201cSister of Mine\u201d<br \/>Stockholm University of the Arts<br \/>Sweden<br \/>In his filmmaking, director-writer Vaara explores intimate stories about identity, gender roles and power. He is currently developing his first feature, \u201cBeautiful Misfits,\u201d which received a Wild Card production award from the Swedish Film Institute. The film tells the story of the tender yet destructive friendship between two 13-year-old boys who run away when they are threatened with being separated.
