{"id":3558,"date":"2026-07-04T17:06:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T17:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3558"},"modified":"2026-07-04T17:06:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T17:06:08","slug":"maggie-gyllenhaal-on-subverting-female-stereotypes-and-why-she-never-set-out-to-break-taboos-im-just-trying-to-make-space-for-my-own-experience-to-be-expressed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3558","title":{"rendered":"Maggie Gyllenhaal on Subverting Female Stereotypes and Why She Never Set Out to Break Taboos: \u2018I\u2019m Just Trying to Make Space for My Own Experience to Be Expressed\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tIn only two directorial outings, Karlovy Vary Film Festival honoree Maggie Gyllenhaal has managed to subvert more than 100 years of cinematic female stereotypes \u2014 \u201cThe Lost Daughter\u201d acknowledged the darker aspects of motherhood and what\u2019s expected of women, while \u201cThe Bride\u201d gave the Bride of Frankenstein agency and autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3556\">Box Office: \u2018Minions &amp; Monsters\u2019 Scares Up $16 Million on Friday<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tGyllenhaal received the President\u2019s Award on Friday at the festival\u2019s opening night ceremony, and talked to the international press on Saturday in a suite at the neo-baroque Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cFor most of the time that people have been making movies, they have been made by men,\u201d she said, noting that while \u201cthere have been some fascinating female characters\u201d created by male filmmakers, \u201cI think if you\u2019re living a very different experience fundamentally as a male filmmaker \u2026 I don\u2019t see how you have insight into all of a feminine experience, especially the parts of ourselves that we are ashamed of, that we hide that we don\u2019t like to share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe said when she read Elena Ferrante\u2019s novel \u201cThe Lost Daughter,\u201d \u201cas a mother, I thought, oh, whoa, I can\u2019t. Are you so fucked up? Hold on, I actually relate to what you\u2019re saying. And then a kind of comfort washes over you, like, wow, somebody else has said out loud something that I\u2019ve never heard said aloud before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen asked if she was trying to break down barriers, she said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m just trying to make space for my own experience to be expressed, to make space for [\u2018The Bride\u2019s\u2019] Jessie Buckley\u2019s experience to be expressed, to make space for my production designer\u2019s experience to be expressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGyllenhaal thoughtfully added, \u201cIt\u2019s not that I\u2019m interested in [breaking] taboos, I think it just comes off that way because there\u2019s been so few [women] making movies, and so it seems like these things are off-limits. It\u2019s just they haven\u2019t been explored. And I did not expect to make people so angry by exploring them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhat she\u2019s interested in is multifaceted women. \u201cI\u2019m not really that interested in \u2018strong female characters.\u2019 I\u2019m interested in a depiction of women that I can recognize as something that has to do with my own experience, which usually includes some strength, some terrible weakness, some beautiful weakness and vulnerability, some pleasure, some terror \u2014 the whole spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe said this with a kind of bemused laugh, then related that she was talking to a woman that she \u201creally respects, who\u2019s about 70\u201d who asked Gyllenhaal a very pertinent question: \u201cHow could you possibly not have been surprised?\u201d That drew genuine laughter.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3554\">\u2018The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping\u2019 First Look Revealed in \u2018Meet Haymitch\u2019 Featurette<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe\u2019s back in business with Warner Bros. despite the lack of box office for \u201cThe Bride,\u201d adapting critically acclaimed best-seller \u201cCreation Lake\u201d by Rachel Kushner, although Gyllenhaal wouldn\u2019t be drawn on details.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI was completely surprised\u201d that the story about the book\u2019s option \u201cended up in the press,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m at the very, very beginning of playing with that project, and I\u2019m at the place where it\u2019s really private, and it\u2019s really about me bouncing around ideas on this incredibly interesting material.\u201d She praised Kushner\u2019s artistry but is still \u201cbouncing it off my own mind and my own heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLike Gyllenhaal, Warner Bros. toppers Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca have been taking big swings lately. \u201cI really love Pam and Mike. They\u2019ve been just wonderful as partners all the way through this process. They\u2019re lovers of film and lovers of filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGyllenhaal\u2019s films star some of the best actresses of this generation, and it is important for her to be as generous as possible with them, their instincts and ideas. \u201cPart of the reason why I moved into being a writer and a director is because I found that many directors were not interested in my art, my expression if it looked different than what they imagined when they were home in their room,\u201d she said. \u201cI got very good at figuring out ways to protect the little bit of real estate around me. But then I got tired of having to like do that dance, and I thought I need more space. Not only do I want the freedom to express myself, I want to offer that freedom to other artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe looks at films as kinds of languages to be learned: \u201cYou can jump in whenever you want, but it\u2019s probably in a different language than you\u2019re used to. Isn\u2019t that an interesting invitation? Is that an interesting hand to hold out?
